Sports fans in Kansas — and Missouri residents willing to cross state lines — can start legally betting on their favorite teams today.
The sportsbook soft launch will begin at noon on Thursday, followed by a full opening on September 8.
The release comes just in time for the first football games of the season for the Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas State University Wildcats and University of Kansas Jayhawks. That was an uncertain prospect when the bill passed late this spring and faced a long and arduous regulatory process.
“With the NFL season kicking off on September 9, the timing is perfect to showcase our NFL in-play betting capabilities in particular,” PointsBet Group CEO Sam Swanell said in a statement .
Several sportsbooks have been offering signup bonuses as advertised on social media and television.
“It’s an especially exciting time of year, and we’re excited for eligible Kansans to get in on all the action,” DraftKings co-founder Matt Kalish said in a statement.

The Kansas Lottery and the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission approved temporary rules and regulations to operate sports betting. These guidelines were reviewed by Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s office and required approval.
Near Wichita, the Kansas Star Casino will host a grand opening on Sept. 8 that includes a ceremonial first punt by former Kansas State University and Green Bay Packers star wide receiver Jordy Nelson.
How can I place a wager?

Online and mobile betting is also available through various third-party providers contracted by the casinos.
The state’s federally recognized Native American tribes could soon offer gambling. More locations, such as restaurants and gas stations, will likely offer ways to bet on athletics in the future.

Hollywood Casino in Kansas City, Kansas will have in-person sports betting and mobile sports betting through Barstool Sports.
Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane will have in-person sports betting and mobile sports betting through FanDuel.
Boot Hill Casino and Resort in Dodge City will have mobile sports betting through DraftKings. It is expected that face-to-face betting will be offered in the future.
Kansas Crossing Casino in Pittsburgh will offer mobile sports betting through BetMGM, Caesars and PointsBet. In-person betting is expected to be available in the future.

What are the types of wagers and betting lines?

Point spreads are a type of bet that includes the outcome while taking into account how high the score ends. You win money if you bet on the favorite and they win by more than the expected margin. You can also make money by betting on the underdog to pull off the upset or to “cover” by playing a closer game than expected.
Over/under bets are placed on the combined score of the two teams in a match. You win money if you correctly predict that the total points scored will be higher or lower than the number set by the sportsbook.
There are future probabilities, like predicting far in advance who will win the Super Bowl or the Heisman Trophy in college football. These bets are usually more lucrative.
Other types of bets are also offered, such as same game parlays, player accessories and special odds.

The defending national champion Jayhawks are among the favorites to reach the Final Four, according to Vegas Insider. Sportsbooks have Kansas behind Gonzaga, North Carolina, Houston, Kentucky and Duke.
How much money will Kansas make?
How much of the cut the state would take from revenue was a major issue lawmakers debated, eventually settling on a 10 percent tax. Several million dollars in tax revenue is expected annually.
The current fiscal year is expected to bring in $1.8 million in new tax revenue for the state. Tax estimates increase to $6 million and $10 million over the next two years.
Proceeds will go to a white-collar crime fund used to investigate illegal gambling, a new fund designed to attract professional sports teams to Kansas and combat gambling addiction.
While the state may not be doing too much, the spending is expected to help businesses by legalizing an activity that benefited offshore operators, keeping more money in Kansas.

What does +9.5 spread mean?
The Lakers enter the match as clear favourites, with a spread of 9.5 points. This means that the point distribution market in sports betting would look like this: Lakers -9.5 Pelicans 9.5. If you back the Lakers to cover the spread, they must win by 10 points or more for your bet to be a winner.
What does a +200 money line mean?
A 200 money line would mean that if you bet $100, you would win $200. It also tells you that the team is not expected to win as it is the underdog in the game.
