Women’s golf has proven an impressive progression of improvement over its campaign over the past year, from opening the fall season with a 12th out of 14 at the Nittany Lion Invitational, to winning first place at the Prospect Bay Intercollegiate and Hartford Invitational at spring. But a sixth of six finishes in the Ivy League Championship, where luck and injuries have left the team, leaves a lot to be desired and asserted in the upcoming fall season.
The departure of coach Jason Calhoun from the role of the past five years has left the post vacant since July. Replacing Calhoun will be former Seton Hall coach Clay White, whose 18-year resume with the Pirates includes the recent campaign for the 2022 Big East Championship.

Despite a difficult conclusion to his campaign, ending four straight Ivy League games without a win, Penn’s men’s football proved robust in teamwork and quickly corrected weaknesses early in the season – which should come early in the campaign. this year if Quakers hope to improve.
“Looking back on that season, we would have felt there were a lot of positives,” said coach Brian Gill. “Even in games where we drew or didn’t get the win, we would have come away with the feeling that we played really well. But at the end of the day, those margins are the differences to get to the next level we want.”
The team proved several exceptional outings at the height of their form; repairing his weakness of conceding immediately after his own score. However, Penn struggled in the season-ending off-conference games that dropped them to sixth in the Ivy League.
“I don’t think it would be something that we would look back on and feel ashamed of, or feel like we didn’t do our best, because we did,” Gill said. “We hope that the experiences that come out of these games will be ones where we can look back and see where we failed. So that as we go through the season we can see where we can come out on top.”
A now-experienced squad of veterans will aim to improve last season’s shortcomings through mentoring veterans and graduate students and a unique array of talent in new recruits.
The Quakers should set their bar high after a 5-2 season where Penn averaged a 40-point margin on all of his wins, including a 63-0 win over Cornell. Penn is on an eight-game winning streak against Big Red as his only other Ivy League opponent, but he will face the Navy and Army again this season, which served the Quakers to their only defeats in 2021.
