And what can we do about this problem, again, when a player requests to be moved, it has a ripple effect on many other players, on the player’s team and other teams. So it is not only potentially the league or the team governors who are affected by it, but many other players as well.
This is one of the problems that when we move into this collective bargaining cycle, which we are just beginning now, we intend to discuss with our players’ association and see if there are solutions for this. Again, as I said, it will never be the case when players will not be dissatisfied in certain situations, but we do not want to see it play as it is now.
I think it is something where there are mutual interests between the players together and the league, with more stability. So there is something we are going to discuss with the union.
On the one hand, as Silver noted, the constant flow of off-track trade requests and drama takes away from actual basketball and makes the league more and more a soap opera. The star players’ ability to force themselves out regardless of how many years they have left of the contracts also puts the teams in a precarious position.
On the other hand, fans’ interest in the off-court drama is one of the main reasons why the league has become a year-round product and is constantly increasing in popularity. In addition, players rarely ask out of winning situations, and you could argue that if a team cannot build a competitive team around its star, then it is their own fault if they have to switch them.
No matter which side of the argument you land on, it is clear that the current situation is untenable, and some adjustments will have to be made in the near future. To that point, it is worth noting another comment from Silver:
