The Mile High Blaze went to Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio to win a national championship and respect over the weekend. They achieved both.
Denver’s semi-pro women’s soccer team defeated the Derby City Dynamite of Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday 21-20. in the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) Division II National Championship. Quarterback Kimberly Santistevan threw three touchdown passes, including the game-winning one, to Stephanie Skinner to seal the state’s latest sports championship.
After the game, Blaze owner Wyn Flatt’s phone blew up with congratulatory messages, emails and calls from many across the state and beyond. The team even received greetings from Denver Mayor Mike Hancock and Governor Jared Polis.
“Hopefully our city can see that we have women playing football and playing hard football,” Flato said. “We feel blessed to bring a championship of this kind home to our city and to be the first of its kind to happen here in Colorado.”
The Blaze’s first championship is Denver’s sixth title on the national stage this year, joining the Colorado Avalanche, University of Denver men’s hockey team, Denver East High School hockey team, Littleton Hawks hockey team and Colorado Mammoth.
The Blaze hope to carry that momentum into next season when they play in the WFA’s premier division, the Pro Division. This year, the WFA Pro Division Championship Game was broadcast on ESPN2. Other games were streamed online.
“The goal is to make more people aware,” said Flato, who is also the league’s director of operations. “The more we make them aware, the more sponsorships will come in to help the players.”
Flato is hoping to get one big-name sponsor to sign up and get behind the team – specifically the Denver Broncos. Over the years, she has made a strong push through social media to get the Broncos front office to take notice of her team. With the Broncos’ new ownership, Flato has big goals…if he can get their support.
“My goal for us since I took over this team eight years ago has been to be able to play a mini-game at halftime for the Broncos just so Broncos fans can see there’s football in the spring,” Flato said. “The women of the Mile High Blaze are ready to throw you a game and give you football season when the Broncos get going.”
