She came to Muhlenberg for its accelerated partnership program with the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, which allows students to earn bachelor’s and dental degrees in seven years instead of eight. Eligibility for the program took most of her three years at Muhlenberg. |

| That’s one of the reasons he’s interested in the computational biology internship he landed this summer at Pfizer: “[Computational biology] is basically the intersection of data science and biology,” says Sailam, a biology major that started at Penn this fall. “I really like using my coding background to help people understand more about things like proteins and DNA.” | At the beginning of the internship, Sailam learned the basics of the R programming language on the Jupyter Notebook, “which is not as difficult as expected, because I can translate some of my knowledge of coding from high school.” She says. Now, he writes scripts to help map information from a database of different cell markers into a “family tree” of sorts, to see which markers are in the network and how the markers relate. | The group worked to create a reference guide for cell markers: “Say someone [sick] and [doctor] can find specific cell markers that are at a higher level in their body,” Sailam said. “By looking for different cell types that are associated with that marker, we can pinpoint any of those diseases.” |
| Despite having a clear end goal about dentistry, Sailam always seeks a broad understanding of health care, imagining and working in the offices of doctors and dentists. This internship in the pharmaceutical industry contributed to that understanding. | “The model that we use plays a role in future dental technology, and if I want to open a practice at some point, having the background and understanding of where some of this information comes from will help,” Sailam said. | We have also seen, through ADEA data, that the total average GPA and the DAT among dental school enrollees increased.
