PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — A Phoenix neighborhood says loud music keeps them awake at night. Neighbors say the El Rey Muerto bar on 35th and North avenues reopened over the weekend with new owners. On Saturday night, they say the music was unbearable, literally shaking their homes.

“That’s right there, that’s the bar. So this is my house, my yard, and this is them there,” Christina Neely said as she pointed to the business. He has lived in the neighborhood for the past eight years. Since then, he says, there has been a business directly behind his house.

“It was called The Hideaway, then it was The Last Stop, and then it’s been closed for a while, at least a year. Now I hear from my neighbors that it’s a dance club,” Neely said. He feels like Saturday night was the first time the music was too loud.

“The problem we had is that they were playing music at full volume until 2 in the morning and the bass was so loud that we could hear it throughout our house,” he said.

We knocked on the door of the business, but no one answered. We also called the number listed for the business and found out that the owners are from El Paso, Texas. We talk to them on the phone and they say they wish the neighbors had come to them directly. Still, they hope to work with them to address the problem.

“It makes me a little nervous to walk into a bar and say ‘can you turn the music down?’ So I really didn’t know what to do. Do I call the city, do I call them? Nelly said.

The City of Phoenix has zoning ordinances that can be used to address these types of complaints, depending on the associated zoning district and permitted uses. No complaints have been filed with the Department of Neighborhood Services at this address. “They have to realize that we are a neighborhood. Like these houses are right behind you,” he said.

If residents would like to file a complaint, they can do so through the myPHX311 app, by calling Neighborhood Services at 602-534-4444, or by emailing blight@phoenix.gov.
