Imagine this: you have a preschooler attending a place where their day is full of singing, playing instruments, painting, drawing, working with clay, dancing and playing. Children are engaged in singing their alphabets and 123; paint and draw the shapes of letters and numbers; explore dance movements and other motor skills to strengthen the curriculum; and spend time in the theater, creating characters who learn all the elements a preschooler should know before going to kindergarten and first grade. And your child adores it.

Children participate in group activities where they are free to develop their imagination and participate. They sing instructions to children to stay focused, promote memory, and maintain order without ever raising their voices. Children are well-behaved and love to be in school because they are immersed in practical activities, develop strong social and emotional skills, and build a lot of self-confidence.

So what am I talking about? An art-based preschool.

There comes a lot of information about early childhood education and how art has a positive effect on young children. Several studies have shown that children who engage in art from an early age develop motor skills, communication, decision-making, visual learning, creativity, and focus faster than those who do not.

In short, an art kindergarten is a school that uses art as the center of all teaching and learning. Singing, playing instruments, dancing and moving, painting, making crafts, and playing stories and songs are part of an art-based kindergarten. The teachers in this kindergarten are art professionals who love working with young children. Thus, children not only learn the curriculum through art, but also find their artistic talents at an early age.

I have personally visited such a place in Iowa and as a professional artist I can tell you that it is not at all like a traditional kindergarten. I witnessed small children who were absolutely enthusiastic about their activities. They were focused, worked together and communicated extremely well with each other and with their teacher. And the level of talent I saw at such a young age was amazing.

The reason I even went to Iowa to visit this kindergarten is because Arkansas doesn’t currently have an art-based kindergarten. Well, that will change.

Children can come between 7.30 and 12.30. Monday through Friday and can stay until 2:30 p.m., or stay for extended artistic protection until 5:30 p.m. In the afternoon, children will attend ballet courses, Suzuki strings, children’s choir, instrumental ensembles, language courses including Spanish and sign language, fine arts, puppet and musical theater.
