Ne-Yo believes “heartache creates great songs”.
The 42-year-old singer admits that RnB music has always “made sense” to him, and he still wants to be able to express himself through his music.
The superstar – whose real name is Shaffer Smith – said: “RnB has always meant something to me.
“It’s always been the kind of music that I can really express that level of emotion with.”
Ne-Yo admits that love songs, in particular, arouse his emotions.
He told The Independent: “It’s always been an indisputable truth that heartache makes for great music.”
Ne-Yo sued his wife, Crystal Renay, in 2020. But the CCIDID-19 epidemic proved to be a change in their relationship and they gave their romance another try, after joining a parent in the midst of a health crisis.
The singer – who has Roman, four, and Shaffer, six, and Crystal, as well as Mason, 10, and Madilyn, 11, with actress Monyetta Shaw – said: “We used to be bad at letting things escalate.
“But we’re better off finding our way to a quick fix, instead of just staying mad for too long. That’s not healthy for you, or your marriage.”
Ne-Yo addresses their problems on one of the songs on his new album.
On ‘Usandide’, he encourages Crystal to reconsider their love and also admits to mistakes within their relationship.
The award-winning singer – whose new album is called ‘Self-Explanatory’ – said: “I asked him if he was okay when I put it on the album, because it’s a record label.”
