You never know where you’ll hear chamber music in Vermont. You can come across a performance of a string quartet in a bookstore. In the cafe. In a bar. Or a retirement community.
If it is July, the musicians will probably be participants of the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival. The festival, which began in 2005, attracts more than 200 young string musicians from high school to graduate school. The program is based on St. Michael’s College for a month of intensive training, practice and performance with a faculty of experienced teachers and performers. They then take their talents on the road, performing classical music at venues throughout downtown Burlington in a series they call Classical Encounters.
The Vermont Conversation spoke with the three musicians about their musical journeys and their hopes for the future.
Andrés Celis is a 19-year-old cellist from Venezuela whose family left his home and moved to the United States so he and his brother could pursue music.
22-year-old Jalayne Mitchell took refuge from her tumultuous home life by learning the cello. Then she got a scholarship to study at a conservatory in Scotland.
Layla Morris, 19, is a cellist who grew up in Hinesburg and now attends the renowned Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio.
The Vermont Conversation also spoke with Elizabeth Chang, artistic director of the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival.
For Mitchell, playing the cello is more than just music.
“It meant security to me. It meant…no need to survive,” she said. “I felt unsafe for a lot of my life. The cello gives me that sense of security that I haven’t experienced anywhere else. I can just research what I want. … I see what I am capable of.”
