Luther College Music Education students are preparing to re-launch Luther College Community Music School. Musicians from the region are invited to sign up for the 2022 fall offerings. The LCCMS will offer private study, service learning opportunities and community events next year.

“I’m excited about the opportunities to teach students about music in a real-world environment,” said Emily Fisher ’23, a student teacher. “I know this experience will help me grow as a music educator and it will be a positive experience for young students to learn a new skill.”

Students of all ages enrolling in private lessons (all bands and orchestral instruments, piano, guitar, drums, and ukulele) will have twelve 30-minute lessons per week with LCCMS teachers on Monday afternoons or Saturday mornings upon request of other schedules available. At 19:00 there will be a recital by LCCMS students. Monday, Nov. 14, in the Noble Recital Room on Luther’s campus. Tuition is $ 150, which includes lessons, participation in the recital, and a student recital assistant. It is possible to register online for the lessons at https://lccms.luther.edu.

The LCCMS learning service component allows Luther music education students to volunteer under the supervision of a faculty member. Community connections will include music classes at the Sunflower Child Development Center, Modern Band (rock band) students at Crossroads Academy, a ukulele group with students from home school, and conducting the Voices in Harmony choir at Gunders ’Harmony Care Center. These experiences are designed to be beneficial to participants and our future educators.

The first community event, Ukepalooza, will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Jenson Noble Hall Orchestra Hall. Send your student (over 10 years old) or bring the whole family to play in a fun evening group. Bring a uke if you have one or use ours!

The Youth Concert is an event created for young students in Preschool and Primary Education. We choose a picture book and bring it to life with music, complete with audience participation activities, followed by an animal experience at the instrumental zoo. Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 5th at 10:30 am!

“I’m excited because it’s an opportunity to teach through LCCMS to apply what I spend so much time learning – teaching music to a large community and kids,” said Patrick Carew ’24, a student teacher. “As a person I entered college in the fall of 2020, the opportunity to work with students in the classroom in the first year was not a reality for me, so eventually being able to see and feel what a facilitating learning environment is. It’s very exciting. The sooner I can understand how to be the better teacher I can be, the better. ‘

Luther College Community Music School exists to nurture students of all ages and levels of experience, expand musical skills, provide affordable opportunities for music education, provide teaching experience for future music educators, and promote lifelong music making.
