After two years away, the 80/35 Music Festival returns to Des Moines this weekend with an impressive set of performers filling the lineup.
The two-day music festival begins on Friday at 5 p.m. with a presentation by Guided By Voices on the Hy-Vee Main Stage. The final act of the weekend, Charli XCX, is scheduled to close the festival at 9:15 p.m. Saturday.
“It’s the first performance in Iowa for Charli XCX, as well as for Haiku Hands,” said Mickey Davis, executive director of the Des Moines Music Coalition, which entered the role late last year. “It’s the premiere in Des Moines, I think, for Father John Misty and Japanese Breakfast.”
According to Davis, this year’s event is not only bigger than the last time the festival took place in 2019 – with more than 50 groups this year – but also has more free performances for attendees.
“!!! (Chk, Chk, Chk) and MonoNeon – they’re both going to put on some really fun, really high-energy shows,” Davis said, referring to two of the performances closed the Kum & amp; Go to Stage on respective nights. “Both of those will be spectacular performances.”

Because of these free shows, the wide range of genres, and the centrality of Western Gateway Park, Davis hopes everyone can find a reason to come and enjoy the event.
This enjoyment will be made easier by multiple transportation options. The event offers secure bike valet parking through DSM Street Collective and DART Route 60 is scheduled to extend service until midnight on July 8 and 9 with a designated location for the festival at the corner of 10th and Main Streets.
“I really want to emphasize that there is so much of this festival that is accessible – even people who may not think of themselves as the festival type will enjoy 80/35,” he said. “We really want to just do it. A festival for everyone and bring out people who enjoy concert music and may not see themselves in the festival environment.”

5 p.m. – Guided By Voices begins the festival on the Hy-Vee Main Stage. The independent rock band comes from Ohio and has produced songs like “Game Of Pricks” and “I Am a Scientist” for nearly four decades of music making. The band’s latest album, “Tremblers and Goggles by Rank” was released earlier this year.
7 p.m. – The Grammy-nominated indie pop group Japanese Breakfast is coming on stage. The decade-old band released hits such as “Boyish” and “Be Sweet”. The band also provided music for the indie video game “Sable,” released late last year, with a song called “Better the Mask,” which frontwoman Michelle Zauner said was one of her favorite songs she ever wrote in an interview with Slate. Last year also marked the release of the band’s third studio album, “Jubilee”.
9:15 p.m. – Grammy-winning existentialist folk rock artist Father John Misty arrives to close on Friday. Perhaps best known for his album “I Love You, Honeybear”, he was behind songs like “Real Love Baby” and “Chateau Lobby # 4 (in C for Two Virgins).” His latest album, “Chloë and the Next 20th Century,” was released earlier this year.

Noon – Launches the main stage shows for the day local rap artist B. Well, the stage name of Des Moines music artist Billy Weathers. The creator of the B. Well Foundation – which supports after-school programs for children – opened for famed rap artist Nelly at Horizon Events Center last year.
1:30 p.m. – Follows B. Well is Miloe, an independent pop performer with a focus on abundant soundscapes. His single, “Floating” was released earlier this year.
3:15 p.m. – Altrok group The Envy Corps follows in the schedule. The Ames-based band released songs like “Story Problem” and “Make It Stop”. The band released their latest album, “Born in Fog” in May.
5 p.m. – Coming from Chicago, singer-songwriter Jamila Woods will come to 80/35 to play the Hy-Vee Main Stage as well. Woods is known for songs like “Giovanni” and “Holy”. She lent her voice to rum.gold’s “Aimless EP”. She also collaborated with the aforementioned Miloe on the single “Winona”.
7 p.m. – The indie pop group Future Islands – known for songs like “Black Out Days – Future Islands Remix” performed with Phantogram and “Seasons (Waiting on You)” – play the penultimate performance on the main stage for the night. The group released their single “King of Sweden” earlier this year.
9:15 p.m. – Grammy-nominated British pop singer Charli XCX, who has released hits such as “Boom Clap” and “Beg for You”, closes the festival on Saturday night. Her newest album, “Crash,” was released in March and, according to Davis, this performance marks her first time playing Iowa.

Street closures for 80/35
To accommodate the festival, street closures will be held around Western Gateway Park where the festival is held. According to a Tuesday statement from the Des Moines Music Coalition, those closures will be as follows.

Grand Avenue will remain open for westbound traffic. Walnut Street will also remain open as a detour for any eastbound traffic redirected from Locust Street.
Parking for the festival is available in the National Parking Garage, located at 12th and Walnut streets with street parking also available in the vicinity.
