Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for “drones” to build up the military’s air capabilities.

On the outskirts of Kyiv, troops are in training to be the tip of the spear in Ukraine, to modernize its tactical response to the front lines of the war with Russia, through a significant expansion of its drone fleet.

The Ukrainian military has no official drone unit, but the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has made it possible to make Kyiv reconnaissance along the 2,470 kilometers (1,535 miles) front line, see Russian forces and equipment, and the Artillery at a distance to direct fire at targets.

Drones save Ukrainian lives, but they are expensive and short supply.

“Today, it is very important to have a drone in every battle unit, because this is our eyes in the sky,” said Deputy Anton Galyashinskiy, a Ukrainian Army expert in visual data analysis.

Galyashinskiy and nine of his fellow soldiers learn to pilot drones from a moving vehicle. They are trained by the Global Drones Academy, a private company run by Anton Veklenko, which has been operating unmanned aerial vehicles since 2015.

“One of the most important aspects of training is the safety of the use of civilian drones in a combat zone,” Veklenko told AFP.

A specialist in drone photography, Veklenko expanded into military training after Russia invaded Ukraine in February, teaching civilians and the military how to become a remote drone pilot for war effort, and how not to become targets of Russian fire.

“At the beginning of the war, many of our soldiers died because they did not know they were being observed [while drones were being used],” he said.

“We have developed a method of not showing your position.”

‘Army of Drones’

Both sides in the war had already used smaller radio-controlled drones, but Kyiv said Russian electronic countermeasures blocking their communications systems were becoming increasingly effective. Two weeks ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy launched an “Army of Drones” call for private cash to buy a fleet of military UAVs from countries around the world.

Ukrainians and overseas trailers have already raised about 13.5 million euros ($ 13.5m), equipped for an initial 200 military-grade machines equipped with state-of-the-art thermographic cameras, GPS and mapping software.

“The key thing is that they are hard to see, which means they are hard to fall off,” the appeal said on the website.

“These drones help to constantly monitor the front line and identify the positions of the aggressor.”

Yury Shchygol, head of Ukraine’s cybersecurity and intelligence service, told reporters this week that procurement teams already had a contract with Polish manufacturers and had taken four tactical drones. They are investigating possible dealers in Israel, Japan, Portugal and the United States, he added.

Zelenskyy also calls for “drones” – gifts from smaller consumer drones – to be donated directly to Ukraine or to camps in the US and Poland, for further shipment to the front lines.

Hobbyists and commercial drone pilots have already started donating their machines, but Ukraine sets its sights much higher.

“We have received 30 drones in the ‘Donate your drone’ program, both from Ukrainians and from abroad. Our goal is to collect 1,000 civilian drones,” said Shchygol.

The drive took on a new urgency this week, with U.S. officials warning about Russian plans to get hundreds of combat drones from Iran.

Learning to operate civilian drones takes two weeks, Shchygol said, while pilots of military-grade reconnaissance drones receive one month of training.

But he believes that the effort of the “Army of Drones” will bring dividends over the conflict with Russia.

“Elon Musk himself said a few days ago that wars of the future will be decided by drones,” he said.
