“All of this security assistance (to Ukraine) is aimed at ensuring that Ukraine succeeds in this counteroffensive,” said another State Department official, who briefed reporters in the southeast of the Poland before the visit.
Blinken had traveled to Poland with journalists, but authorities did not allow media to accompany him to Ukraine, citing security concerns.
Reclaiming territory currently occupied by Russia would put Ukraine in a stronger position in possible future talks to end the war, a third State Department official said.
“At the moment, the Ukrainians don’t have a viable map from which to negotiate,” the official said.
“That’s why we support this counter-offensive…to put them in the strongest possible position, and make it clear to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin that after hemorrhaging all that money, all that capital, of all these weapons, of all these young Russian boys — who have also been chewed with the Ukrainians — that it is time for him to come to the table in good faith.
The trip also comes ahead of the United Nations General Assembly later this month in New York, where Blinken will address world leaders as Washington tries to maintain opposition to Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Meeting with Ukrainian leaders would help Blinken push back concerns about the economic impacts of the war, including in the global south where rising grain and fertilizer costs have led to food security concerns, U.S. officials said. . Read more
Blinken is heading to Brussels on Friday to rally support from U.S. allies for Ukraine as Europe braces for a winter of high energy prices and possible shortages with reduced gas supplies from Russia, officials said.
