It’s not easy to leave a stone unturned at the 52-year-old, once-and-for-all crime scene.

Not when researchers have to dig mostly by hand so as not to disturb any evidence that may still be hidden in the soil.

Armed with spades and toothbrushes, West Virginia State Police forensic investigators and others have been at it in earnest in recent weeks in a wooded area near Morgantown.

It’s a location that has chilled and enchanted generations of campus residents. This is where the decomposed, dismembered bodies of Karen Ferrell and Mared Malarik were found in 1970.

The WVU freshmen and friends were spied sitting in a cream sedan in Morgantown on a cold night four months ago. They drove downtown back to their dorm after the movie.

A side note to the account is as painful as it is gruesome: the victims’ heads have still not been found after all these years.

Therefore, extensive archaeological-style work began in mid-May.

Albert “Rod” Everly, a retired contractor and vocational teacher, was with the National Guard unit that discovered the bodies that April afternoon 52 years ago.

He was rekindled by a recent book and podcast about the murders, a series of anonymous letters purported to have been written by the perpetrator.

He squared the site according to the author’s instructions, and in mid-May, six corpse dogs, screaming and wagging their tails furiously, went to the two areas where the writer said the final evidence might be found.

As recently as last Monday, two other groups of dogs – all working separately from each other – all had the same reaction to varying degrees in the above areas.

“That’s what keeps me going,” he said. “Dogs all catch the same scent in the same two places.”

Everly briefly hired an excavator and a professional operator to dig a few more feet at each location to expand the study area.

Meanwhile, high-tech help is on the way.

Michael Kief, who does forensic work with the West Virginia State Police, said the agency is buying ground-penetrating radar this month to help solve such cases.

“It’s basically an X-ray machine,” said Kief, who recently went on to become a state police lieutenant and has worked several cold cases in his career.

He said the technology uses radio waves to detect anomalies in the soil and layers, such as depressions, sunken areas where bodies or body parts may be buried.

“We get a 3D image of the area,” he said. “We can all grid.”

Kief said the agency will complete the paperwork for the purchase this month. It works, this technology may be in use, there are two remains of life torn away near a Morgantown residence.

Both and Everly said it would really be about closure if a definitive discovery could be made.

Steve McGuffin agrees. Her aunt and uncle were Richard and Bess Ferrell, Karen Ferrell’s adoptive parents.

He was 2 years old when his cousin and his friend were killed. Because the family is close, he probably met Karen Ferrell when he was a toddler — he just doesn’t remember, he said.

What he remembers, he said, is the character of two people who just wanted to keep going in the face of terrible loss.

Two people who bought groceries and Christmas presents for neighbors in need, and sometimes anonymously.

“They lost everything, but they didn’t pull in,” he said of the couple.
