Our city council approved a new position last year within our police department as well as the rest of the city administration, and what a great asset we now have with Hannah Anderson.

Mental health is something we all have in common, just like physical health, and we all need to take care of ourselves and those around us. Hannah’s role is to develop, reference, and connect between the community and the police department when a mental health crisis presents itself on a call for service. She encourages families to connect or re-connect resources to gain access to mental wellness services.

Hannah hit the ground running as she approached various agencies to gather information about her policies and procedures, including the Savannah Police Department’s Behavioral Health Unit and the Richland County Sheriff’s Office Crisis Intervention Team.

Hannah has dated all mental health calls of 2021 to compare with current statistics for 2022 and track trends and mental health calls.

A typical day at the office involves going through the previous day’s call and figuring out how to track them, updating mental health statistics, answering emails and returning phone calls, continuing their networking efforts, and following up with clients. / Families / Suppliers.

On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, she spends the entire shift with officials and assists in calling for service when needed.

Since her appointment, she has completed 92 follow-ups and completed 210 hours of ride-along with officers. These follow-ups were with clients, their families, mental health professionals, and case workers.

Hannah assisted officers on the scene with 12 mental health-related calls for service. She helps to escalate the situation and get the rapport with the individual with mental illness in her family. It collects pertinent information such as mental health history, contact information, current providers, and any insurance information.

The next day, she will reach out to the individual mental health care provider of the individual to provide information about our interactions with her patient and follow up with the individual / her family to provide information on any resources they need.

Her role in our city was so successful that she now helps Beaufort County create a position similar to hers, sits in on job interviews, and ultimately trains the employed individual.

I hope this gives a glimpse into what our employees are doing for our city.
