TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Shawnee Co. Health Dept. is among 19 organizations that have received community grants for chronic disease risk reduction.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says its community health promotion team has announced recipients of the 2022 Chronic Disease Risk Reduction Community Grant. Overall, it said 19 recipients will cover 31 counties and over 2 million Kansan, 70% of the population.

KDHE said the CDRR program provides funds, training and technical assistance to communities to address chronic disease risk reduction through evidence-based strategies that impact tobacco use, physical activity and nutrition.

The Department indicated that strategies include reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, preventing youth tobacco use, promoting tobacco treatment and the Kansas Tobacco Quitline, increasing physical activity, and improvement of community nutrition.

“We are thrilled to announce this year’s CDRR beneficiaries and look forward to our continued collaboration with state partners in their effort to reduce chronic disease. This grant provides funding to communities across the state to evaluate their health data and address local priorities through changing policies, the environment and systems, “said Secretary Janet Stanek, Department of Health and the Environment.
