Sometime in August 2020 when the COVID-19 virus was raging, Denise Lauers wiped out her savings and began looking for help to feed herself and her two sons.
A longtime resident of Somerville and a single mother, Lauers said he lost about 80 percent of the income he earned from his small cleaning business after running a business with the disease. Even though her children are receiving childcare payments along with $ 80 a month in federal assistance, she continues to struggle.
“How much can you live on $ 80 a month?” he said, referring to his own ineligibility for federal assistance because of his immigration status and income.
Lauers was one of about 25 parents with food security to offer testimony and advice at a public discussion on food insecurity led by the U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley in East Boston Monday. Free school meals and integrating food safety research into public health systems have emerged as popular solutions.
The discussion comes as President Joe Biden’s administration prepares to call a conference on hunger, nutrition and health in September. It would mark the first discussion of its kind since 1969, when then -President Richard M. Nixon did something similar that provided hundreds of suggestions for reducing hunger.
“Of course, God’s mercy didn’t keep my kids from starving,” Lauers said with tears in her eyes, pointing to high store prices. “We have a little [federal] benefit, but it’s not enough.”
Advocates testified, arguing that free school meals ensure that even children from difficult families can eat.
“We want the entire country, or here in Massachusetts, to make sure that all students can count on free school meals,” said Erin McAleer, General Manager of East Boston-based anti-hunger nonprofit Project Bread. “We know the public is eliminating branding, reducing costs and feeding children.”
McAleer said one in five families with children in Massachusetts is struggling to get enough food. Before the disease, about half – to 9 percent.
The share of insecure households peaked in 2020, then began to decline as food aid and other programs increased. But many of the programs have been cut back, McAleer said, fueling a resurgence of food insecurity, especially among people of color.
“When you also break down those numbers by race and ethnicity, what we’re seeing is that more than 33 percent of Black and Latino and diverse households in Massachusetts are facing food insecurity. … So, we’re still in trouble here. “
Officials with Project Bread and other organizations also directed the addition of food safety surveys in the use of patients in hospitals.

Lauers said he believes federal assistance programs, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program formerly known as food stamps, should also be more general than revenue.

Many of the people who shared personal stories of the struggle indicated they were living illegally in the country, which Pressley said should be straightforward.
“When we talk about public opportunities, it means not denying anyone,” he told reporters. “No one should be left behind, no one should go hungry in the rich country of our country.”
Asked about the hunger of his councilors for hunger relief, especially those associated with immigration issues and insecure conditions, Pressley said he would continue to treat the issue and urgency.
“Unfortunately — and it’s not a good feeling for me to say that because I’m serving the government — usually, not led by the government, it responds,” he said. “I don’t make predictions about people. I just have to continue to focus events on those I represent and fight for their greatest needs to be met.”
