Local non-profit organizations such as the United Board of Missions and the Community Care Prayer Outreach are seeing an increase in people seeking food aid.
Most people at a grocery store in the past do not pay as much as they did before the price went up.
Debbie Perkins, managing director of BMM, said last month they distributed a ton of food and it is increasing every month.
On top of that they are seeing people they have never met looking for help.
“There’s a total increase in everything,” Perkins said. “These are the highest gas prices I have seen in years and groceries too. And there is a need for groceries, gas and basic necessities. ”
The UMB is open from 9 am to 1 p.m. Monday to Thursday at 6650 9th Ave., Port Arthur.
Libby Arnold, director general of CCPO in Nederland, said they too have seen an increase in those in need.
CCPO is valid for appointment only and is currently booked in mid-July.
“It’s a very difficult time, there are a lot of people we see who have never asked for help with food or anything,” Arnold said.
There is a great need and it will further increase the prices of courts are still rising.
All non-profits order South East Texas Food Bank and also receive assistance from local churches.
