Julie Berninger, 33, has made many attempts. She has maintained a blog that brings in thousands of dollars a year. She had a podcast that enabled her to meet hundreds of financial and combat experts, even though it was never a revenue stream. And her Etsy store, where she sells items like bachelorette party activity lists, brings in $ 1,000 in passive income.

After many years of talking, it happened to Berninger that she could teach some of the side-gig lessons she learned. In 2019, she teamed up with fellow hurler Cody Berman, and both founded Gold City Ventures, an online courses business specifically focused on building additional revenue streams.

The two began with courses on free practice, blogging and opening an Etsy store for printable items like Berninger’s. The last course was by far the most popular course, and in 2021, Gold City Ventures brought in $ 1 million in revenue.

Berninger, who lives with her husband and daughter in Massachusetts, resigned in July 2021 to focus on the business full-time. Here is her career advice for other entrepreneurs.

Work in corporate America

Berninger spent years working in companies like Amazon and MetLife. She advises any entrepreneur to spend time working in corporate America before diving in.

Berninger has acted as project manager at some of his day jobs, for example. “You learn how to work backwards from an end result,” she says. “You learn how to make a timeline, and you also learn how to manage resources. Whenever she had a budget, she would use it to hire freelancers to take on some of the workload.

“No matter what career field a person is in, you are retiring from being in your day job,” she says. Think about what those skills might be, and always think ahead to what else you can learn then that might apply.

Take advantage of trainings and education

Some companies also provide various in-house training and salaries for their employees for off-the-job education. Take advantage, says Berninger.

Sometimes her companies would introduce guest speakers, for example. “I always went to each one,” she says. People would write books about entrepreneurship.”

All of these provided opportunities to learn how to become a better entrepreneur herself. “It’s just about getting inspired and getting external ideas and learning as many skills as possible,” she says.

‘Build those breaks along the way’

“This is something I’m still working on,” Berninger says of his final piece of advice. This may interest you : Cleve Francis, Still an Inspiration for Black Country Music Artists. “But take those breaks along the way.”

Even if you are pursuing your entrepreneurial dreams while working full – time, and have only small windows to do what you want to do, minute breaks will help you focus. A 2011 study from the University of Illinois found that among different groups of people who performed a 50-minute task, those who took two short breaks remained focused throughout the entire experiment. Performance for those who did not take breaks declined.

And if you can spend those minutes doing something that makes you happy, that’s an added bonus. Ashley Whillans, assistant professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and author of “Time Smart,” recommends doing activities like sending messages to someone who’s important to you or checking your vacation balance. Both have been proven to improve mood.

“You can really be swept up and there’s always a ladder or another level to climb and there’s something else you could always be doing,” Berninger says. “But learning how to enjoy the path along the way” may help you get the most out of it.
