No one understands the pending game as fans of Game of Thrones. Devotees of the epic fantasy series by George R.R. Martin has been stuck for more than a decade since the last novel, A Dance with Dragons, was released in 2011, and the author has been pushing it since the release date of his next book. (One point of clarification here: the HBO series based on the novels is called Game of Thrones, after the first novel. The series of collective novels is titled A Song of Ice and Fire.)
“Winter Wind will be a great book,” Martin wrote on his blog earlier this year, explaining what Esquire called “the most publicized blockchain case in human history.” Martin added that the book “could be bigger than A Storm of Swords or A Dance With Dragons, the longest books in the series to date. I usually cut and cut once it’s finished, but I need to finish it first.” .
In that update, Martin gave no indication of how close he was to finishing, so it’s safe to say that fans of his A Song of Ice and Fire series will have to wait a little longer.
The good news is that HBO will soon release its highly anticipated prequel series, House of Dragons, which describes the Targaryen civil war. And for the uninitiated, this long book break is a perfect opportunity to get hooked on the famous heavy novels. Here’s how to read it in order.
Technically it’s not part of the Song of Ice and Fire series, but it’s also worth including it in your reading plans. Fire & amp; Blood details the Targaryen family story, and is the basis for HBO’s next spin-off series, House of Dragons. A second volume is presumably on the way, as Martin has finished with more material than he could put into a book.

The Game of Thrones (Book 1)
The first novel in the series introduces the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, and also sets out some of the characters we will get to know and love about the series. The Game of Thrones features perspectives intertwined by nine characters, including Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, and the Stark family: Ned, Catelyn, Sansa, Arya, and Bran.

A Clash of Kings (Free 2)
The second novel in the series focuses on a civil war between the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and Daenerys’ simultaneous mission to conquer the kingdoms for herself. The second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones was largely based on A Clash of Kings, although it did deviate in some key ways.

A Storm of Swords (Book 3)
This third novel in the series is also the longest to date, although judging by Martin’s updates, The Winds of Winter could eventually steal this title. A Storm of Swords follows the War of the Five Kings in Westeros, introduces a ghost army, and includes the famous Red Wedding (if you know what you know).
