Members of a popular internet forum have revolted after a woman explained how her book-loving niece sadly ended up without books.
In a viral Reddit post posted to r/AmITheA**hole, Redditor u/aitabibliophile (aka the original poster or OP) said he shares that love of books, but revealed how his sister’s disdain for reading sparked a great conflict between the family. members
Entitled, “[Am I the idiot] for telling my sister and [brother-in-law] that they are ‘a shitty excuse for parents’ after finding out they threw away my nieces’ books?” the publication has received nearly 8,000 votes and 1,400 comments in the last day.
Writing that both she and her 16-year-old niece “Liz” are avid readers, even branded bibliophiles, the original poster said she has always encouraged the habit, despite criticism from the teen’s parents.
“Liz usually sends me a list of books and I pick a few like birthdays, Christmas, etc.” OP wrote. “Liz’s parents… are the opposite. They think Liz wastes a lot of time reading.”
Recently, the original poster said that her niece borrowed a book and that she planned to retrieve the book when her family got together for dinner over the weekend. However, the original poster discovered that the book was missing, as well as the unfortunate reason why.
“Liz wouldn’t look me in the eye and acted a bit awkward, which is out of character for her,” OP wrote. “She seemed very upset and said she was sorry but she couldn’t give me back my book because her father threw it away.”
“She said she was behind on doing chores or something, so [her dad] picked up some books from the shelf, he had mine in the stack, and put them all in a donation bin,” OP continued. “[Her parents] joked about how Liz is going too far and not listening to them, and she’s a moody teenager who will get over it.”
“I snapped at them and told them that they hurt Liz a lot and that they are a shitty excuse for parents,” OP added. “I felt grossed out and told Liz to send me a list of the books she lost and I’ll buy them back from her.”
Disciplining teens, for serious infractions or less serious misconduct, is a challenge for many parents.
Despite a host of difficulties, parents often resort to similar disciplinary tactics, and in the age of the Internet, most of these tactics involve distressed teens’ most prized possession: the cell phone.
In the past decade, data compiled by the Pew Research Center revealed that 62 percent of parents in the US have taken their teen’s phone as punishment, with 13- and 14-year-olds more likely to of losing your digital privileges.
In 2018, leading mental health publication Psychology Today examined the practice of deprivation and why taking possessions and privileges away from teens can be just as risky as it is effective.
“Deprivation must be kept short-term to be most effective because the longer it lasts, the easier it becomes for the adolescent to adjust to living without it,” wrote Psychology Today contributor Carl E. Pickhardt Ph.D.
“In the worst case, excessive deprivation can create deep and permanent injury and provoke an act of anger,” Pickhardt added. “I suggest using deprivation selectively, not routinely, and keeping it as a last resort only after three other corrective approaches have been tried first.”
While it’s unclear if the original poster’s sister and brother-in-law tried other approaches or why they felt the need to punish their daughter, OP said they made the decision to get rid of their niece’s books altogether, almost certainly without considering returning them.
Throughout the comments section of the viral post, Reddit users called out the couple and used heavy sarcasm in criticizing their brazen parenting style.
“Teen who reads, someone quick call the police,” Reddit user u/JackeyLoveJay wrote in the top comment on the post, which received more than 14,000 upvotes. “[Not the **hole].”
“They’re books,” added Redditor u/venusjupiternix, which received nearly 5,000 upvotes. “No drugs”.
Reddit user u/ClothesQueeasy2828, whose comment received more than 2,300 upvotes, questioned why parents prevent their children from reading when most parents want their teens to read more.
“[Not the ** hole],” they wrote. “In a world where children don’t prepare enough, why would a parent discourage it?”
“‘Cranky teen reading books’ is pretty much the best case scenario for a cranky teen,” chimed in Reddit user u/echoCashMeOusside. “All teenagers are moody, but at least it’s developing their imagination and stimulating their intellect and not trashing mailboxes.” .”
