There is no crying in streaming! Does it work ? Is it something? Look, if Prime Video wants to turn the beloved 1992 Tom Hanks/Geena Davis baseball movie A League Of Their Own into a TV series, I’m going to have to reference its most famous line. It’s just the law of the internet.
Internet law also forces me to question the need for a movie-to-TV remake of what is already a pretty perfect narrative account of the rise of all-women’s baseball leagues during World War II, when Many baseball-age men in the country were fighting for freedom and democracy and all those good things that the game symbolizes. Premiering August 12, the remake justifies itself, at least, by expanding the story to consider a group of black women who also take up the game, and I’m intrigued by the involvement of Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson as co -creator (with Mozart in the Jungle, executive producer Will Graham).
Also coming this month: Thirteen Lives by Ron Howard (August 5), a narrative account of the rescue of a group of boys and their football coach from a flooded mine in Thailand in 2018. The reviews are okay but unenthusiastic; you could probably just watch the 2021 documentary story The Rescue instead (it’s on Disney+). There’s also a second season of a Spanish-language remake of I Love Lucy called Todo por Lucy (August 19) that I just found out; it’s weird, huh?
Here’s everything else coming to Prime Video (and Freevee, an ad-supported subsidiary) in August.
