No, August is not the month Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power comes to Amazon Prime Video. That’s September. But there are still some good Prime Video shows and movies in August, including Ron Howard’s film about the 2018 Thai cave rescue, Thirteen Lives, and the streaming debut of Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2021 film Licorice Pizza. Both will be released on August 5th.
As for TV shows, Stephen Merchant’s British comedy The Outlaws returns for a second season of random crimes on August 5, and the great-looking adaptation A League of Their Own steps up to the plate on August 12. Finally, the De Sylvester Stallone’s superhero movie Samaritan, which was supposed to be released in 2020, will finally be released on August 26.

Thirteen Lives (August 5, Prime Video)
Ron Howard directs this thriller about the 2018 Tham Luang Thai cave rescue of a boys soccer team and its coach from an international group of cave divers. It is one of three projects about the rescue, including National Geographic’s previously released (and excellent) documentary The Rescue, which focused on the divers and rescue efforts and is on Disney+, and Netflix’s upcoming limited series Tham Luang, which focuses on rescue. Licorice Pizza (August 5, Prime Video)
One of the most acclaimed films of 2021 is Paul Thomas Anderson’s teenage romance, which has been nominated for three Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. A League of Their Own (August 12, Prime Video)
Penny Marshall’s classic 1992 baseball movie gets extra innings in this eight-episode series about the formation of a World War II era all-women’s baseball team. The setup is mostly the same, but the longer time frame — and 30 years of progressive cultural movement — means the Prime Video series will more fully explore ideas like race and sexuality. Samaritan (August 26, Prime Video)
This dark superhero movie was supposed to save the day in 2020, but a series of delays pushed it back to 2022 and to Amazon Prime Video instead of theaters. Sylvester Stallone stars as a superhero named Samaritan, who hides for 20 years until a young boy finds out who he is and encourages him to clean the streets once again.
