NEW DELHI: On July 26, Amazon Prime Video will air Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, a biographical drama based on the life of Nambi Narayanan, a former Indian Space Research Organization scientist and space engineer who was accused in an espionage case and later acquitted. The film is written, produced and directed by R. Madhavan, who also plays the lead role. It will be broadcast in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

In 2021, over-the-top (OTT) streaming platforms saw films in four South Indian languages, including their dubbed versions, gain large audiences, accounting for as much as 10% of total viewing minutes.

Western and northern Indian states such as Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi NCR (National Capital Region) accounted for 75% of dubbed movie viewers, platform executives said.

Malayalam film Minnal Murali, starring Tovin Thomas, was one of the top ten non-English films on Netflix in the last week of December, with 5.9 million hours watched, while Jai Bhim, Sarpatta Parambarai and Soorarai Pottru were among Amazon Prime’s biggest hits Videos. After its theatrical release, the drama RRR was dubbed into Spanish, Portuguese and Korean for Netflix.

Netflix also saw its Tamil anthology Navarasa top 10 in 10 countries including India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. In its first week on Netflix, more than 40% of the film’s viewers were from outside India.

In the last one year, films like Nayattu (Malayalam), Andhaghaaram (Tamil), Pitta Kathalu (Telugu), Paava Kadhaigal (Tamil), Cinema Bandi (Telugu) and Mandela (Tamil) have all made it to the top 10 in India.

To be sure, a slew of films, including SS Rajamouli’s RRR, Vijay’s Beast and Telugu’s Acharya, have opted for faster OTT releases than earlier to make up for their box office losses, reviving the debate on shrinking the window between theatrical release and digital release. For example, the Ram Charan-starrer Telugu film RRR, which was supposed to air 75-100 days after its theatrical release, was launched on OTT within two months due to poor response to the film. A few others air less than a month after they hit theaters.
