Sylvester Stallone’s new thriller Samaritan will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on August 26. The film is directed by Julius Avery and co-stars Javon “Wanna” Walton, Pilou Asbæk, Dascha Polanco and Moises Arias.

American movies, TV shows and programming in Turkish, German and Korean — including their dubbed versions — are emerging as a big draw on over-the-top (OTT) video streaming services, accounting for as many as 30% of the total. viewers, said senior executives at several of these platforms.

While such international content finds ready takers among young urban Indians in the metros, those in small towns benefit from their dubbed versions in Hindi and regional languages.

Netflix’s Extraction and The Kissing Booth have been hits in Hindi and Tamil, as have The Boys, The Tomorrow War, Wonder Woman and Parasite. Walt Disney, too, has decided to tap smaller towns by making Disney+ content (including Marvel) available even on its cheaper price plans in India to expand reach.

While a handful of niche, foreign language TV channels and torrent sites on the Internet introduced Indians to international content earlier, OTT platforms have helped improve accessibility. While metro audiences are oversaturated with the discovery of such international content on OTT, small towns have recently started to get a taste of what can be considered cool, and it’s part of the social media conversation. Covid has also exposed people to a lot more things on the phone, given that many large families don’t have multiple TVs.

While TV has laid the groundwork for international programming, OTT has the luxury of talking to consumers individually and adjusting recommendations with artificial intelligence and machine learning. Action, thriller, crime, fantasy and science fiction are popular genres in the international category.
