There’s no shortage of streaming services available in Australia, but new data from JustWatch tells us that Netflix is still the go-to service in the Australian market, with Prime Video catching up.

JustWatch bills itself as the “easiest way to browse your favorite movies or TV shows to see if they’re available for streaming on any of your favorite video services.” I use JustWatch almost daily, so if you haven’t already, be sure to get started. They also claim over 20 million monthly users.

According to JustWatch, Netflix was the most used streaming service in Australia in the second quarter of 2022 (April, May and June). Netflix held 28 percent of the Australian streaming service’s market share, but was closely followed by Amazon’s Prime Video service, which has a 21 percent market share. Disney+ came in third with 17 percent, Stan, owned by Aussie, was the top local streaming service, with a market share of 10 percent. Binge was next with 9 percent, Foxtel Now had 6 percent and Paramount+ also had 6 percent market share. The other 3 percent consisted of ‘others’ (think of Shudder, DocPlay as an example).

Despite Netflix’s lack of subscriber growth, which prompted the platform to introduce an “advertising tier,” Aussie’s market share has remained stable. It peaked in March this year, with April, May and June all around the same level (the 28 percent JustWatch reports). But Prime Video is on the rise. In January, the streaming service had a market share of about 17 percent and climbed to 21 percent in the following months.

Prime Video actually has the best ‘cost per title’ ranking – that is, the amount of content you get for the price. Amazon Prime Video has 8,815 titles available in Australia. With a monthly cost of $6.99, the cost per title is $0.00079. In comparison, Netflix has 6,135 titles available in Australia. Priced at $10.99 (base) per month, the cost per title comes in at $0.0017.

JustWatch’s streaming market share statistics are in line with Telsyte’s last year. As of June 2021, 6 million Australians were subscribed to Netflix. In second place came Prime Video, with 2.9 million subscribers. Disney+ had 2.6 million (this is before it was announced that Marvel content will be shipped to Disney’s streaming service, mind you) and Stan clocked in at 2.4 million.
