‘NextGen’: Graduating Artist Exhibition
Visual Arts The latest exhibition to open in the Balboa Park grounds of the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in San Diego is a selection of works by artists graduating from regional art programs. On the same subject : Waterbury Arts Fest kicks off Friday night with a blockchain party. The artists were selected by a jury consisting of Beatriz Cortez (whose work ‘Glacial Erratic’ I profiled in early 2021), Isabel Dutra from Bread and Salt and María Elena Ortiz from the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
I’ve glimpsed a few pieces in the show, including Beck Haberstroh’s beautiful, interdisciplinary sculpture and performance of the shadow play, “You took my impression without ever touching me”; Isidro Pérez Garcia’s serpentine assemblage sculpture, “Corazones de Sacrificio”; and intriguing textile works by Gideon Sawyer. A total of seven artists were selected, with María Antonia Eguiarte Souza, Victor Castaneda, Dianne Preciado and Matt Williams around the list.
The exhibition opens on Friday evening with music by Xayn Naz. It’s free, but you can register in advance.
Details: Opens with reception from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm. Friday, July 14, 2022, through September 4, 2022. ICA San Diego-Central, 1439 El Prado, Balboa Park. Free.
