As the new president holds the helm at Peking University (PKU), its free technical college is at an advanced stage since its inception.

Since its inception simple in 2001 as a small, experimental project within China’s leading center, Yuanpei College today, with many steps, progress is impressive. Great to create a full-fledged professional college with more than 1,200 students, drawing crop cream from applicants to a parent organization.

“Yuanpei has become a prestigious college in PKU. Every year we have the best students from all over the world – PKU and Tsinghua have the best students, but we have the best,” said Feiyu Sun, his fellow dean.

But as the university enters a new era of leadership under Gong Qihuang, Yuanpei will once again need to prove its worth. With competition between Chinese graduates higher than ever before, convincing more people — even students — the value of its liberal teaching model continues to be a major battle.

“In the last 20 years, most of the PKU leaders came from behind science and technology, so we had to ‘get’ our support from the management. Some professors understand that Yuanpei is important, but many do not, even today, even after 20 years,” said Sun.

In China, where students spend years preparing for solid exams with the aim of placing them in tertiary universities to study the fields of expertise described in detail, Yuanpei’s performance still seems overwhelming. Local students are free to choose their own classes — without any special requirements — and can graduate between three and six years instead of the fourth. They don’t even want to announce the big one with their second year.

By the way, the college does not have its own professors, a step that always puts it in conflict with the wide faculty at PKU, some of whom see Yuanpei students as not committed to disciplining and competing for limited resources with students. within their departments.

“This gave us a lot of problems at first because students and professors from other departments did not want students from Yuanpei,” Sun said.

Since then, the performance of students in their classrooms has helped change the dial, persuading professors who do not want “that a student who does not take any major in the first place and can change major without any restrictions can do better than students learning technical skills from scratch,” said Sun.

He commended the driving of the Yuanpei students, based on a genuine interest in the courses they will develop.

“In China many students come to university to study economics or business because it was their parents’ choice. Students learn that a lot but don’t like it, ”he said. “If the students of Yuanpei choose the big one, they choose it for themselves… In Yuanpei, you really want the big one.”

Getting to this point, however, is not always easy. Unlike most university students, who choose a department and simply follow a course, Yuanpei students have to choose their own courses, something that is difficult to do.

“The students at Yuanpei are very nice, enthusiastic, ambitious [and] know what they are doing, but some come to Yuanpei because their studies were good in high school, not because they know what they want to do at university,” Sun. he said.

Like its students, the college itself is still finding its way.

When Yuanpei started as a program in 2001, there was no plan for what the Chinese liberal arts college would look like. Leaders of the program cannot simply “borrow Harvard mode” or the old Chinese mode, Sun said.

“We had to find a new type of Chinese, combining Chinese culture, tradition, history [with] modern education… We had to use imagination.”

This remains Yuanpei’s biggest problem to this day, Sun said.

Recently, the college has shifted its focus to creating an environment where students learn outside the classroom. Compared to countries with long-standing traditions, the importance of socializing is still foreign in China, with students expected to learn during their university years, something that Yuanpei’s recently built residential college aims to address.

“We wanted to connect students to give them a public space so that they can have fun, talk to each other, and solve things they like a lot. We want to explore the university life in China. I believe that few professors in China think about this question,” said Sun.

He is convinced that the art of doing things for free, whether in the classroom or in the bedroom, pushes students to have “wider horizons.”

But to the serious doubts of colleagues, any obvious benefits will need to translate into results for Yuanpei’s alumni. As one math professor recently told the Sun, the only thing that beats him are cold, hard numbers, numbers that won’t be seen for years to come.

“If we want him to believe in the Yuanpei example, we have to convince him with those numbers of students who study mathematics in Yuanpei and then after 20 years become famous scientists.”
