Her character, a government contract killer, has a modicum of originality and that she is a high-end fashion model working in Paris. BMX Bandits (1983)
Justin Kurzel’s understated adaptation of the blockbuster video game is an intensely somber work that never fails to impress viewers, in a genre that almost always infants the audience. To see also : Netflix ranks last among streamers by perceived value – but it’s still the number 1 service you must have, poll finds (EXCLUSIVE). A rich pictorial look brings visual flair to an admittedly difficult script – with too much rather than too little plot – after Michael Fassbender as he inhabited the body of an assassin in 15th-century Spain.

Eddie Murphy was at his A-game in the second- and best-installer in his most famous franchise, playing a Motormouth fast-thinking detective who moves from the back streets of Detroit to the Beverly Hills pool. Fist of Fury (1972)
A frizzy-haired, rosy-cheeked young Nicole Kidman (16 at the time of the film) stars as one of the titular whippersnappers who scooted around Sydney on bikes, playing the plot of criminal masterpieces. Filled with playful shots, unconventional angles and DayGlo colors, this bona fide 80s classic is kitschy and shiny, set to the tune of a pumping synth soundtrack.
The General (1926)
Tom Cruise plays an ice-cold hitman and Jamie Foxx’s gruesome taxi driver / driver in Michael Mann’s sleek single Night Thriller, which, despite a polished look, counts noirish street-side vibes. Stuart Beattie’s sleek script is elegantly structured, and the action scenes – including a very memorable nightclub shoot-out – are closely linked to character and situation.
Goldfinger (1964)
Before the introductory credits even rolled, a late Bruce Lee kept the dirt over the grave of his teachers in heavy revenge. The Martial Arts legend’s screen-buckling presence seems to extend beyond the many evils he inflicted on the structure of the film itself, and smashed it into equipment. Fist of Fury is one of the more notable (and rewatchable) titles from 70s chopsocky cinema.
Heat (1995)
No one who watched Buster Keaton balancing precariously on a bumper in front of a train could ever forget that image; it’s a timeless imprint of one of cinema’s first action-comedy masterpieces. In his Magnum Opus, the brilliant comedian steps into the Civil War as a train engineer, pursuing enemy troops and preventing their attempts to remove him – while naturally making virtuous slapstick.
Inglourious Basterds (2009)
“You expect me to talk?” “No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!” Expect everything you want, Goldfinger: You should have used a weapon to kill 007 instead of a balanced death machine. Sean Connery’s third outing in Bond Tux marks one of the franchise’s highlights, loaded with hilarious performances and memeable scenarios.
Jack Reacher (2012)
Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro confront each other as obsessive cops and a big thief in Michael Mann’s exalted crime film set in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles. The director’s stop-start dynamics alternate between action outbursts and simple dialogue exchanges, which most memorably take place between the two main actors over a meal, over a cup of coffee.
Jaws (1975)
It begins with vintage monologues by Christoph Waltz and culminates in an explode-and-palooza of historical revisionism, the cinema itself being the site of the death of Adolf Hitler. Tarantino’s penchant for pop-art cinephilia is on full delirious display, sprucing up a stop-start narrative about – as Brad Pitt so eloquently puts it – “killin ‘Nazis.”
The Man From Hong Kong (1975)
“Did I need a knife in Siberia?” That’s the showstopping line in Jack Reacher, shot by a very gruesome, very shitty foodie Werner Herzog, plays a former political prisoner cum evil. Tom Cruise is the leading man, in good shape as a fast-thinking tough guy in a complicated conspiracy plotted with crimes, conspiracies and gruesome old duke. Generic but rewarding.
Mission: Impossible (1996)
The shark catcher and Steven Spielberg’s iconic creature feature famously needed a larger boat. The film itself – an excitingly exciting blockbuster – has changed the foundation of multiplex cinema, ushering in a new era of tent pole spectacles. The history of unsubtle messages has contemporary relevance, beyond the advice of public health experts.
No Country for Old Men (2008)
Before it was Mad Max, it was Brian Trenchard-Smith’s chopsocky Australian action movie – which features a huge eight-and-a-half minute car chase that must have inspired George Miller and his street fighters. Jimmy Wang Yu plays a kind of Chinese Dirty Harry, infiltrating a crime network by George Lazenby. From the opening scene, Trenchard-Smith (an exploitation legend) reigns supreme with friendly, rhythmic gusto.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969)
The mission: Impossible Franchise emerged as an unlikely defender of author theory, each film helped by a director encouraged to bring their own style rather than a streamlined approach (à la MCU). The first to deliver Brian DePalma’s flair for methodically explored set pieces, Premier Tom Cruise’s attractive iteration of special agent Ethan Hunt. Red light, green light!
The Revenant (2015)
Walking on a ton of cash, without owner and sight? That’s good! Being chased through the land by Javier Barden? That’s bad. Very very bad. Action, Hitchcockian suspense and lost monologues by a world-weary Tommy Lee Jones combine wonderfully in the modern Western of the Coen brothers, after a man (Josh Brolin) who can’t resist the said song.
Robocop (1987)
In his first and only Bond performance, Australian George Lazenby unveils a Manchurian candidate-style brainwashing conspiracy intended to spread bacteriological wars around the world. Starting with Bond, who saves a woman from suicide and culminates in the murder of 007’s wife, bringing him back to the singular forever, Peter Hunt’s film achieves a melancholic impact unique in 007vers.
Scarface (1983)
Leonardo DiCaprio has never been more difficult than in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s neo-Western survival film: he was beaten, cut, shot, painted, frozen, buried alive, thrown off a cliff … and that’s just the first 30 Minutes. Starting with a stunning early screen, Emmanuel Lubezki’s striking camera work follows poor Leo in the neighborhood as he embarks on a quest for revenge against the rotten old Tom Hardy.
Sicario (2015)
The year 1987 marked the beginning of a particularly good run by Paul Verhoeven: Robocop then Total Recall then Basic Instinct. Peter Weller plays a murdered cop who is resurrected as the owner of Cyborg, which calls for a blamfest of action scenes that still feel fresh. The satirical elements today have even more currency, as society is further along the line of artificial intelligence and robotics.
Some Like it Hot (1959)
It’s more of a drama, really – but the last Hellzapoppin moments in Brian DePalma’s highly quotable gangster film (“Say Hello to My Little Friend!”) Alone qualify it was an indispensable action flick. Al Pacino’s cockroach (and mustache) gangster Tony Montana climbs to crime; Good luck to everyone who stands in his way.
The words “Benicio del Toro” and “Mexican drug cartel movie” go together like a horse and cart. The actor’s sleeping threat comes in the dark story of Denis Villeneuve about dodgy cops, moral quandaries and Emily Blunt trying to make sense of everything as an FBI agent. Blunt has a less spectacular role but is a commanding anchor.

“Nobody’s perfect” is the famous closing line in Billy Wilder’s 1959 masterpiece, which asks to the end, surprises and kicks funny bones. Monroe is simply impressive, taking the archetype of the emotionally vulnerable sexy naive in heartfelt directions.
