Prime Video’s Watch Party feature was already a great way to chat with friends while enjoying movies or TV shows online, and now it’s even better.
Previously only available on compatible desktops and the iOS / Android app, Watch Party has now been expanded to work on all devices that support the Prime Video app; from the best 4K TVs to some of the best Roku devices and more. The only problem, as before, is that you need to be a member of Amazon Prime to use it.
The additional support of the device greatly expands the scope of Watch Party and certainly gives it the flexibility it lacked. Previously, you should watch it with a smartphone or tablet or use a computer or laptop to stream to a TV or Chromecast such as; it’s not an elegant way to enjoy a movie with a crowd of people.

1. Simply click or tap the Watch Party icon that has been added to the options menu next to a movie or TV series.
2. From there, choose a name you want to use while chatting, then tap “Create a display group.” After that, you can share this Watch Party link with up to 100 people; these people can join the party simply by clicking or tapping the link.
3. Once the party is set up and you know everyone is ready, just start the Watch Party. This will play the movie or program and give the host the ability to play, pause, skip and search for the group. People will also be able to participate with comments, directions, observations and satisfied moviegoers on a pop-up chat board.
That means people can sing with their reactions to the Free Navy star battle on The Expanse, or “that moment” at the end of season 2 of The Boys. They could pontificate as to why the crew of the USS Discovery looks rather silly. That super-enthusiastic friend can comment that they saw the No Time to Die twist from a mile away, while those of a cerebral nature, like our own Henry T. Casey, can observe how worthy The Wilds are.
Amazon’s website states that Watch Party is “almost like seeing them side by side in real life, without having to share popcorn.” But I suspect that whoever wrote this hasn’t had more than 50 people in their home, including several who can’t keep quiet during the crucial moments of the film.
Again, no matter how much I enjoy watching solo movies, there is a sense of camaraderie when I watch a box office hit or a hit TV series with a few friends, and then chew the fat. And Watch Party could be a way to do it without the need for excessive planning or bringing everyone together in one place.
