Bill Oakes: Art, Imagination, Vision opens July 9 at Haley Art Gallery

KITTERY, Maine – Bill Oakes: art, imagination, a vision featuring abstract works by a prolific artist, Bill Oakes will open at the Haley Art Gallery in July and open on Saturday, July 9 from 3 to 6 p.m. The gallery will host a speech by Sharon Oakes (Oakes’ widow) on Saturday, August 20 from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibition will be open until September 10. Part of the gallery’s proceeds will be donated to The Dance Hall, Kittery, the seaside’s main venue for intimate, diverse music and dancing.

Oakes’ abstract art was mostly inspired by a 1990 trip to Mexico. Moved by light, textures, colors, peeling posters, and rusting cars, he turned to abstraction from realism. He felt that abstract art encouraged the viewer to use his imagination and “see in a new way. See the article : Union District Parks offers free outdoor music, movies and more this summer.” His greatest pleasure was watching someone make discoveries. Bill Oakes left in 2005, but his art continues to inspire and exhibit.

Oakes grew up in Maine and began painting as a child. After graduating from Brunswick High School, he studied at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington. Moving to Washington to join the Navy, he was appointed to the Navy’s Martial Arts Gallery as the first active artist to offer visual reporting since 1954. His more than 180 paintings and drawings of veterans returning to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Vietnam, a sailor naval diving school, and the recovery of a battleship in New Jersey will remain in the U.S. Navy’s collection of fine arts.

Oakes earned a master’s degree in critical and creative thinking from UMass in Boston and taught at the New England School of Art and Design and the Boston Institute of the Arts. His illustrations have appeared in books and in many magazines and newspapers, including the Washington Post (as an artist in the Watergate trials), the Boston Globe, the Christian Science Monitor, Look, National Geographic, Reader’s Digest, Time, Sail, and Yankee. He created and published several art guides and, together with one of his art students, compiled three children’s books.
