There are few things as satisfying in just about any video game as being completely and totally invincible. The enemies that threatened you before are nothing more than little annoyances that you have to stomp over as you charge through a level without worry.
Of course, a game can never leave you invincible all the time, otherwise the fun will be sucked out of everything. This is why invincibility is usually doled out in the form of power-ups and special abilities. You may not always be able to use them, but that makes the few moments you can use them all the sweeter.
10 Power Pellet – Pac-Man
Imagine being stranded in an endless maze where you are constantly threatened by a bunch of multicolored ghosts. You cannot stop them; all you can do is avoid them – think of them. Then suddenly you find that glorious orb: the Power Pellet (also known as Energizers, Power Food, Power Pills and Power Cookies). One bite and suddenly the hunted becomes the hunter.
Apparently, after his original game, Pac-Man started keeping Power Pellets close to him. In the 1982 Pac-Man animated series, Pac-Man and his family live near a forest where Power Pellets grow on trees, and he keeps an emergency cache of them in a box outside his house. If you’re haunted by ghosts long enough, you’ll learn to keep your perks close at hand.
9 Wonderwing – Banjo-Kazooie
Of all the collectibles in Banjo-Kazooie, and there are quite a few, surprisingly none are invincible on the spot. See the article : Politics Two: Surprising January 6th. This is because Banjo-Kazooie, instead of on-the-spot invincibility, puts the power in your hands with the Wonderwing ability.
When activated by the player, Wonderwing makes Banjo and Kazooie completely invincible to all damage, be it from enemies or obstacles. The only catch is that they need Golden Feathers to maintain the Wonder Wing state. Of course, you can just use the infinite feather cheat code and run through the entire game as a shining ball of invincibility if you want.
8 Invincibility Candy – Kirby Series
Kirby is already an invincible entity on the brink, and we should be so lucky that he is merciful to us. In rare cases, however, a single candy is enough to take Kirby to unstoppable status. Fans have theorized that Kirby’s mighty state when eating a piece of Invincibility Candy is actually the result of a sudden sugar rush. It is logical; Kirby’s whole life revolves around food, so if a candy had a certain density of pure sugar, it wouldn’t be impossible for it to affect him on a physical level.
7 Super Star – Mario Series
Since the very first Super Mario Bros. game, the Super Star has been the basic, accept-no-substitutes invincibility power-up. When Mario grabs one, he starts to flicker and flash like crazy, dazzling enemies as he races through the fields of the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond.
Subsequent Mario games have introduced useful variants of the Super Star, such as Super Mario Galaxy’s Rainbow Star and Super Paper Mario’s giant, pixelated Super Star. Really, the only thing better than being invincible when using a Super Star is to hear that classic invincibility jingle.
6 Reflective Shots – Blood
Blood has a traditional invincible power-up, the Death Mask, that makes you completely immune to all forms of damage, but it’s not as interesting as the alternative: Reflective Shots. When you pick up a Reflective Shots power-up, not only are you completely immune to enemy attacks, but any attacks that hit you are immediately reflected back to your attackers.
This means you can just stand still while a whole group of monsters surround you and let them pound and shoot you as much as they want. You can then see all their heads suddenly explode from their own attacks. Of course, this doesn’t work with fire and ghost attacks, so maybe don’t take it for granted.
5 Super Sonic – Sonic The Hedgehog Series
Possibly the only invincible power-up more established than the Super Star is the Chaos Emerald-powered Super Sonic state of Sonic. In most 2D Sonic games, a lot of work is required to obtain this skill as you have to enter and complete each bonus level to find all the Chaos Emeralds. But if you do, all you need is 50 rings and a jump, and you can go to the races.
Unfortunately, in modern 3D Sonic games, Super Sonic has largely been relegated to boss status, adding an extra wrinkle of strategy and gameplay. But on the plus side, that usually means you can count on playing the games great theme song when Super Sonic comes out.
4 Bullet Bill – Mario Kart Series
The item systems in the Mario Kart games are all about prioritizing those who are left behind. The further you are from the first place, the more likely you are to get something cool to even the odds and narrow the distance. While you could get a Super Star for invincibility, there is a much more satisfying option: Bullet Bill.
When you activate a Bullet Bill, your shopping cart turns into a giant, er, Bullet Bill! With the power of Bill’s oversized rocket engine, you can blast past the competition, blasting them out of the way at high speed and making potential attacks unsellable. Of course, you’re never quite sure where your trajectory will leave you once it’s worked out, so you could just fly off a cliff.
You didn’t think the Super Star was the only invincibility option in Mario’s playbook, did you? No, that plumber has quite a few resources to defuse himself, and one of the coolest and most iconic, possibly even more so than the Super Star, depending on who you ask, is the Metal Cap from Super Mario 64.
As Metal Mario, Mario is not only completely invulnerable to enemy attacks, but he can also breathe and move freely underwater. While he may not have the vertical swimming offerings, it’s much easier to navigate just being able to run and jump underwater. And of course we can’t forget that great remix of the invincibility theme.
2 Infinity – Persona 3
Invincibility in a JRPG? It’s more likely than you think! Using Fusion Spells, special abilities that are unlocked by having certain Personas in his heart, Persona 3’s Protagonist can bring about all kinds of beneficial effects. One of the most beneficial is, of course, Infinity, brought about by a combination of Vishnu and Ananta.
Infinity makes each character in your party completely invincible for one turn. That may not sound long, but one turn can make all the difference in a battle where a single attack can destroy a side. In Persona 3 Portable, Fusion Spells have switched to consumable cards instead of regular SP abilities, but if you know how to get them, you can still use Infinity to its fullest.
1 Berserk – Doom
If there’s one thing the Doom Slayer is best known for, it’s its boundless, inexhaustible source of pure, fiery fury. The man is angry 24/7, but what would it look like if he was even angrier than that? Well, it probably looks something like this when he gets a Berserk power-up.
Under the red-hued influence of Berserk, the Slayer is not only invincible to evil, but his hands become even more deadly weapons than they already are, crushing almost any enemy in one fell swoop. Notably in Doom (2016), he also gains access to special Glory Kills while Berserk, some of which are even more brutal than usual.
