Originally developed exclusively for the Sega Genesis to compete with Capcom’s Final Fight, Streets of Rage proved to be a fun fighting game series. This may interest you : Video games don’t need achievements. Streets of Rage followed several ex-cops (including Axel and Blaze) as they rid a fictional city of a crime syndicate led by Mr. X.

As with any classic platform beat-em-up, each character had unique fighting styles, strengths and weaknesses. There were plans to make a 3D action version of the game, but the project was never greenlit. Instead, the series received a new 2D edition back in 2020, but fans were still hoping for a re-release of the original.

Illusion of Gaia debuted on the Super Nintendo and was an action-adventure RPG featuring three playable characters: Will, Freedan, and Shadow. On the same subject : Policy Report: People asked for time and now they’re getting time because what they really wanted was time. All three characters had the same health and defense bars, but differed in strength levels.

Based on a fantasy version of Earth, players can encounter real monuments such as the pyramids and the Great Wall of China. Unfortunately, Nintendo of America censored the game so that it would contain fewer religious references, and many players did not get the chance to play it uncensored.

5 Quest for Glory (1992) Is A Forgotten Gem

GoldenEye 007 became one of the most remembered games on the Nintendo 64 and followed the events of 1995’s GoldenEye movie. The game proved revolutionary for its time and undoubtedly paved the way for several first-person shooters. It was a 3D single-player FPS, but also offered a competitive Deathmatch mode with three additional players.

GoldenEye 007 was well received both as a movie-based FPS and as a stand-alone game, which combined stealth and multiplayer. Since it inspired FPS games to follow, it’s surprising that GoldenEye 007 never saw a re-release. Instead, the Bond franchise focused on newer versions of the character in games, such as 2008’s Quantum of Solace.

4 Albion (1996) Was A Forerunner Of Modern RPGs

Parasite Eve was a third-person survival horror action game developed by Square back in 1998 and followed New York City police officer Aya Brea as she tried to save humanity. The game proved to be an interesting mix between survival horror and an RPG, combining a real-time combat system with special abilities.

Parasite Eve’s graphics and gameplay received good reviews that led to the release of a sequel, Parasite Eve II, in 1999. By the time a third sequel was released in 2010, gamers had lost interest in the series, but fans fondly remembered the first installment. With new graphics features now, a re-release of the first game would inevitably be a success.

3 Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos (1993) Had Compelling Narration

EverQuest was the first MMO to use full 3D environments. At the time of its release, it became the best-selling online-only game. While its popularity declined due to the likes of World of Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls Online, EverQuest undeniably made MMO history.

EverQuest quickly became addictive thanks to its repetitive, appetite-seeking nature, not unlike MMORPGs today. Considering the competitive nature of the MMO market, fans probably won’t see an EverQuest reboot. However, it is certain that the game would become popular if it ever happened. The game may require extensive rebuilding and graphics work, but it would be a lot of fun.

2 Tenchu: Stealth Assassins (1998) Paved The Way For Stealth Games

Quest for Glory: So You Want To Be A Hero was a wonderfully fun hybrid of point-and-click adventure and RPG, developed by Sierra On-Line. Quest for Glory was remade in 1992 as a point-and-click adventure. Incredibly ambitious for its time, it featured a full day-to-night cycle that influenced the game’s environment.

Skills could not be gained via XP, but through natural usage, like some MMOs today (like New World). While point-and-click adventures aren’t as popular today, a cross-platform remake of Quest for Glory would certainly prove exciting, given Sierra On-Line’s penchant for humor. Unfortunately, Sierra went down in 2008.

1 System Shock 2 (1999) Was Groundbreaking With Character Customization

Albion stood out from most other RPGs of the time, being set in a unique sci-fi setting, which included some fantasy elements such as the use of magic. Players ventured into space to recover natural resources, but crash-landed on a planet with sentient creatures, and had to gather resources to survive.

Albion was praised not only for its unique setting, but also for its balanced combat, story, and exploration. It’s less well-known today, but got a bit of a reboot with Albion Online, which debuted in 2017. Online proved to be different from the original game, as it became an MMO instead of a single-player game.

Lands of Lore was developed by Westwood, now best known for their RTS series Command & Conquer. Lands of Lore was a first person dungeon crawler not unlike Hades. The player had to fight against enemies with a real-time battle system to save the king and defeat an evil witch.
