If and when China attacks Taiwan, US Navy ships can be the first force to intercept the Chinese attack ship.

How many Chinese ships US attack ships can sink, and how quickly, could make all the difference in an apocalyptic “ultra-mega” war, to borrow a quote from Ian Easton, a researcher and the Virginia-based Project 2049 Institute.

A successful US submarine campaign could help bring the war to an early end, preserve Taiwan’s independence and counter China’s global ambitions. A failed submarine attempt, by contrast, could invite Chinese rule over Taiwan and the entire Western Pacific region.

Win or lose, the US Navy must prepare for more losses. Even a victorious USN fleet could suffer a heavy defeat in a war with the Chinese navy in Taiwan.

That is one of the interesting results of a series of important games organized by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. During the 24-hour period of the game, “the submarines were able to enter the Chinese defense zone and damage the Chinese fleet. ,” said researchers Mark Cancian, Matthew Cancian. and Eric Heginbotham.

But even in conditions that were certain for the Taiwanese and the victorious allies, the US under the sea, which today has 53 nuclear and cruise-missile attacks, lost almost half of its ships and thousands of sailors.

The loss shows the strength of the submarine attack that CSIS had hoped for. The idea was that the United States would commit all or most of its submarines to a war with China, perhaps leaving only a few submarines to continue to challenge Russia. ballistic-missile subs.

The 40 or 50 ships will be organized into groups of four ships each and deployed to the US bases in Guam, Wake Island and Yokosuka, Japan. One crew was supposed to be on site in the narrow Taiwan Strait when the first Chinese rocket landed and the crew sailed away.

In the CSIS games, the four ships sank Chinese submarines until they ran out of torpedoes and iron ore. they were chased by the Chinese forces and sunk. Another nine or 10 USN subsquadrons at this time were coordinated in what Cancians and Heginbotham described as a “mobile mission” under the sea. “They hunted, returned to the port, reloaded, then went ahead and hunted,” said the researchers.

“Each ship will sink two large ships (with an equal number of decoys and recruits) over the course of 3.5 days,” the Cancians and Heginbotham wrote. During two weeks of intense fighting, as many as 64 Chinese ships were sunk, including many of the PLA Navy’s largest warships and surface combatants—and possibly some aircraft as well. of the PLAN.

The Chinese ships that succeeded in avoiding the American ships were not safe, of course. CSIS’s own war games found that US Air Force guided missile bombers are more dangerous to Chinese ships than ships. of the US Navy.

In this situation the Taiwanese and their allies won the most, the Chinese navy and shipping lost 90 percent of its ships – and the few Chinese troops that were able to land on Taiwan could not be surrendered. With no sea lines of communication, the Chinese forces on the island quickly ran out of fuel and ammunition.

But even that victory came at a high price for America. Chinese escorts, planes and ships sank a fifth of the American fleet in three or four days during the two-week battle. In the end, about 24 American ships lie at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, graves for 3,000 airmen.

Given their disproportionate role in the Taiwan conflict, the submarines should be a priority in US strategy, Cancians and Heginbotham wrote. “Given the importance of ships, getting more is an obvious suggestion.”

That’s easier said than done when a nuclear attack submarine costs more than $2 billion and only a few American shipyards can build their parts. The Pentagon plans to buy two attack submarines a year for the foreseeable future in order to maintain, and eventually grow, the entire force under the sea.

“The U.S. Navy should commit to funding those two a year even if shipbuilding costs are tight,” the CSIS researchers advise. The Navy can also accelerate the expansion of the submarine fleet by keeping older ships in long-term service.

If the think-tank’s war games are anything to go by, the US Navy will need all the ships it can muster in order to defeat a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
