Republican leader Kevin McCarthy has failed to be elected Speaker of the US House of Representatives, but if not him, who can fill the position?
After three consecutive rounds of voting on Tuesday and three more on Wednesday, Mr McCarthy fell short of the 218 votes he needed to win the job.
Until the chamber has its own president, the body does not swear in its new members or proceed with its legislative session.
The congressman from California insists that he can finally win over his opponents, and remains the favorite to take the famous baton.
But as voting continues on Wednesday, other options may be more palatable.

Mr. Scalise, who is entering his eighth term, survived being shot by a left-wing extremist while practicing for the annual congressional baseball game in 2017.
In the Republican Party‘s internal elections last November, his colleagues elected him unopposed to the position of majority leader, the second-highest ranking member of the House.
On Tuesday, he nominated Mr McCarthy for the third time on the ballot, telling his colleagues to come together if they want to “do great things”.
But Matt Rosendale, a Montana congressman who is one of 20 Republicans blocking Mr. McCarthy’s bid for the speakership, poured cold water on Tuesday on the possibility of Scalise becoming a speaker. He said neither Mr. McCarthy nor anyone else who has been in the Republican House leadership for the past 10 years was acceptable.

Once vice president of Harvard University’s prestigious Institute of Politics, the New Yorker won election to the House as a moderate.
But the 38-year-old has veered sharply to the right in recent years, particularly because of his outspoken support for Donald Trump.
In May 2021, when Republicans ousted Liz Cheney from leadership over her criticism of Mr. Trump, Ms. Stefanik was elected to replace her as chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, becoming the party’s fourth-highest-ranking member. He was re-elected to the position this November.
Ms. Stefanik nominated Mr. McCarthy as speaker during Tuesday’s first vote and was seen taking notes throughout the session.
Other (unlikely) possibilities
The rebellion against Mr. McCarthy has been led by Andy Biggs, a congressman from Arizona who is part of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus. Mr. Biggs, 64, was nominated by a colleague as an alternative choice for Speaker on Tuesday, but received only 10 votes, including his own, in the first round.
Another name floated for speaker was Representative Jim Jordan, a conservative firebrand from Ohio. Mr. Jordan, 58, received just six votes in the first round, but then solidified support for all of McCarthy’s detractors in the next two rounds. But the congressman, in line to take over the chairmanship of the powerful House Judiciary Committee, has insisted he does not want the job and backed Mr McCarthy’s choice on Tuesday.
Neither Mr. Biggs nor Mr. Jordan are viewed by most of their colleagues as acceptable lawmakers as speakers.
In three consecutive votes, 212 House Democrats voted for their leader, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries of New York. But the likelihood of six Republicans crossing the aisle to support Mr. Jeffries as the consensus pick for Speaker is extremely low.
