A “bomb cyclone” had widespread effect in the United States and Canada.

New satellite images show snow and clouds covering the northeastern US states and the Canadian province of Ontario. Treacherous ground conditions on Saturday (Dec. 24) and Sunday (Dec. 25) included blizzards, deep snow and freezing rain, which posed a threat to travelers during peak season.

“As the wind howled and the snow piled up from what some forecasters called a ‘once in a generation’ storm (opens in a new tab), so did the traffic accidents, power outages and transportation problems,” NASA officials wrote in a statement. (opens in new tab) about the images obtained with the agency’s Aqua satellite.

Wind gusts were recorded to 79 mph (127 kph) in Lackawanna, New York, just south of the city of Buffalo. Several other states saw winds blowing at 50 mph, according to National Weather Service statistics cited by NASA.

A “bomb cyclone” refers to a sudden pressure drop of at least 24 millibars in 24 hours. Coupled with blizzards, some communities along the Great Lakes saw incredible amounts of snow.

Communities east of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, particularly the Buffalo region, saw storm surges of more than 50 inches (127 cm), NASA officials noted. In other regions, however, less snow reached the ground, peaking at only about 5 inches (13 cm).

Aqua acquired the images using its Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The image leading this article is in natural colors, while the Twitter embed focuses on visible and shortwave infrared light to better see the differences between clouds (white) and snow and ice (blue).

Satellites are an important tool in weather forecasting and, where relevant, also in disaster relief. NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have a large fleet staring at the planet and have promised to launch more in the 2020s to refresh some of the older ones. Aqua, for example, launched in 2002.
