FedEx and UPS faced delays amid a winter storm.

Freight carriers FedEx and UPS have warned of delays in their cargo operations that may result in customers receiving their packages later than expected this holiday season. The announcement comes amid a severe winter storm that is affecting much of the United States and has already caused the cancellation of thousands of flights.

Disruptions across central and eastern United States

Both FedEx and UPS issued statements Friday identifying disruptions to air and ground transportation at major hubs in Memphis, Indianapolis, Louisville and Rockford. Packages that were initially expected to be delivered by Christmas Eve are now expected to arrive before the New Year.

Up to 15% of the 150 million packages that were scheduled for delivery on Friday and Saturday are delayed.

Passenger flights also affected

More than 7,000 passenger flights have been canceled in the past three days due to the severe weather, with more than 20,000 flights being delayed by an average of 70 minutes. Some airlines were hit harder than others, Alaska Airlines was forced to cancel half of all flights on Friday. Southwest, on the other hand, canceled a fifth of all flights that day. And as travel demand continues to exceed even pre-pandemic levels, passengers whose flights have been canceled find themselves having to wait several days before they can be booked on another flight. Therefore, many airlines suspend change fees for travelers who are willing to travel later.

The most affected airports are Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), Denver International Airport (DIA ) and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).

The winter holiday season is typically the busiest time of year for passenger airlines, as people use school and office closures to go on vacation and visit their families. It is also the busiest time of the year for freight carriers as people await the delivery of gifts for their friends and family. Such carriers often take advantage of the seasonal increase in travel demand and transport part of their cargo on passenger planes since they do not always have the capacity to transport them themselves. As a result, delays and cancellations of passenger flights end up affecting cargo as well, like this winter.

It is unclear at this time how the winter storm will affect profits.

The delays faced by FedEx and UPS ultimately come at a time when shipping volume is at its peak for the year. However, it still remains lower than it was during the height of the pandemic when consumers ordered virtually everything they could online. Fortunately, freight companies have established contingency plans that should allow them to get packages to customers without too much delay, as long as the winter storm does not worsen in the next few days. With a little luck, consumers may still be able to give their friends and family their Christmas gifts this holiday season.
