The United States extends its condolences to the family of the American citizen killed in the fighting in Ukraine, whose remains have now been identified and released into Ukrainian custody. They will soon be returned to their families. The United States appreciates Ukraine for including the recovery of this person’s remains in its negotiations with Russia. Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will not release any further details.

We reiterate once again that US citizens should not travel to Ukraine due to Russia’s full-scale invasion and active armed conflict. US citizens in Ukraine should leave immediately if it is safe to do so using commercial or other privately available ground transportation options. American citizens traveling to Ukraine, including to participate in the fighting there, face significant risks and the United States cannot guarantee their safety. We encourage American citizens to devote their energies to the many other opportunities available to assist Ukraine and its people.
