“The intention and design of ERSS is to carry itself. We bring all of our own equipment and the only requirements from those we expand are electricity, a place to work, a water supply and lighting,” said Cmdr. We can do all this with 7 employees; a surgeon, an anesthesiologist, an emergency doctor, two nurses and two hospital paramedics.”

“NATO has terminology to describe the different levels of care that a person goes through to receive treatment. In the US Navy, on the surface side, the Role 2 capabilities that we have are on our large amphibious ships. These ships have been equipped with an operating room, resources and personnel to be able to surgically resuscitate someone and keep them on board,” Miles said.

ERSS provides Role 2 care in a highly mobile manner and is referred to as a Role 2 Light Maneuver (R2LM). In a distributed maritime deployment where ships are not in a traditional strike group or amphibious readiness group, ERSS greatly improves flexibility and mobility for expeditionary operations. When deployed on a platform, ERSS can accommodate three critical patients and five non-critical patients with its initial charge without equipment.
