VICENZA, Italy – Flags from around the world hung from the ceiling and decorated tables as 13 members of the Vicenza military raised their right hands and took the oath to become United States citizens during a naturalization ceremony Tuesday, Aug. 24, at the U.S. military. Italian Garrison.
After dreaming of this moment, it was finally a reality for Spc. Kelvin Rachuonyo, assigned to Bravo Co., 2nd Battalion, 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade. Originally from Kenya, Rachuonyo followed his family to America in 2019.
He later joined the US Army in 2020 and moved to Italy soon after. “For me, citizenship is an opportunity to sacrifice for my country,” Rachuonyo said.
“Basically, do what your country needs you to do and be there when your country needs you,” said Rachuonyo, who is proud to not only be an American citizen, but also a soldier.
Among the 13 community members who received citizenship were soldiers, family members, and military department civilians. For Zoe Dendy, who is from Italy and married to a soldier in the 173rd Airborne Brigade, becoming a citizen means something entirely different.
“It’s important for me to be closer to my husband’s culture and his family and to be a step towards my new life,” Dendy said.
Army Community Service Office Caserma Ederle hosted a naturalization ceremony on Tuesday, August 24, and community members received their citizenship via virtual teleconference. Eloris James, immigration services officer for the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), administered the oath and completed the naturalization process for new American citizens.
Among the 13, 10 different countries were represented, including Nigeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Italy, Mexico, Cuba, Canada, the Philippines, South Korea and Ireland. As tears streamed down their faces, James announced to the room, “Congratulations, you are now an American citizen.”
