It’s been a chaotic year for the more than 76,000 Afghans who fled to the United States after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan. Many face a myriad of resettlement challenges, including finding affordable housing, navigating a new culture, and caring for family members left behind.
Because the U.S. government only offers benefits to Afghan migrants for a short period of time, many have found it stressful and difficult to pay for rent, groceries, health care and other items for themselves within months of arriving in the country .
Complicating matters is America’s backward immigration system. Thousands of Afghans who are new to the country are on humanitarian parole, which entitles them to be in the United States for just two years. The proposed legislation would help them establish a path to permanent legal status more quickly, but has yet to pass.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Zuhal Bahaduri, who helps the families through the community organization 5ive Pillars, said: “It’s one crisis after another for these families. Getting out of Afghanistan was only half of the battle”.
Despite the struggle, many Afghans say the move to the US has opened new doors.
In this episode of The Stream, we talk to Afghans about how the past year has fared and the uncertainty they continue to face.
