An Indian-American journalist and documentary filmmaker was sent back to the United States after landing at a New Delhi airport last week, his family said.

Angad Singh, who produces video documentaries for Vice News, had arrived in India to visit his relatives, including his mother and grandparents, when Indian immigration officials refused him entry at the airport, his mother told the Voice.

Angad arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport from the US at 8.30 pm. On Wednesday, she informed her mother Gurmeet Kaur in an SMS.

“We were looking forward to welcoming him [in India]. Fifteen minutes after sending the first message, my son sent me another message that the immigration officials took away his passport,” Kaur, an American citizen who is currently visiting family in India, told Hääle. “Three hours later, he was put in New York on the bound flight and sent to the USA.”

Singh, who is an American citizen and a practicing Sikh, had previously visited India several times and made documentaries on topics including the country’s farmers’ protests, the COVID-19 pandemic, Kashmiri Muslim protests and the “love jihad” of the right. Hindu belief that Muslim men lure Hindu women into marriage in order to convert them to Islam and spread the religion.

Singh had last visited India two or three years ago and made a documentary on the Shaheen Bagh sit-in, Kaur said. In 2019 and 2020, women, mostly Muslim, blocked a major road in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh neighborhood to protest India’s new citizenship law, which welcomes immigrants of all faiths from neighboring countries except Muslims.

Later, during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Singh made the documentary Inside India’s COVID Hell, for which he received an Emmy nomination.

Although Singh was on a personal visit to India this time, Indian authorities suspected that he was doing professional work while in the country, according to Kaur.

“He has so many relatives in India. He was definitely on a personal trip. But I think the Indian authorities thought he was doing work related to the press this time… There should be no other reason to deny the entry,” Kaur told Hää.

Indian authorities barred Singh from entering India a few years ago when he was planning a documentary about Dalits, once known as “untouchables” and still at the bottom of India’s Hindu caste system. He was not granted a visa to report on the matter.

“[A] long time ago, his visa application to work on the Dalit issue was rejected. This time his trip was purely personal, no connection with any documentary,” Kaur told Hääle.

Kaur wrote on Facebook that her son was deported because of his work in journalism, where he has often been critical of the government led by Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

“They didn’t give any reason [describing why she was expelled]. But we know it’s her award-winning journalism that scares them,” Kaur wrote.

“It is not easy to be a Sikh, a Gursikh [a term commonly used to describe a practicing Sikh], a journalist, a warrior for truth and justice. … There is a price for telling the truth. We have to pay it.”

People should raise their voice against such deportation, Kaur said.

“We don’t understand why the Indian authorities are taking revenge on him when he was on a personal visit to his homeland. Why are they forcing him to cut ties with his homeland? Kaur added.

At least two media organizations have condemned Singh’s deportation as “retaliation and harassment” by the government.

Union of Indian Journalists president Geetartha Pathak said the episode was “deeply disturbing” and part of an “ongoing trend of harassment and intimidation of journalists by government agencies”. In a statement posted on Twitter, the International Federation of Journalists said the decision to send Singh back “reeks of revenge and harassment”. The advocacy group said it strongly condemned the government’s actions.

Rohit Chopra, an associate professor at Santa Clara University, told VOA that the decision not to allow Singh to enter India “reflects a pattern of denying or revoking visas for academics, journalists and artists, and reveals a deep insecurity that haunts the Hindu nationalist leadership of the Indian state.”

“The message is clear: no matter the evidence, no matter how grave the injustice you are trying to point out, criticize Mr. Modi or his government at your peril,” Chopra added.

India’s home ministry, which oversees the immigration department, has not made any statement about Singh. Phone calls to the ministry went unanswered.
