Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke today with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. Secretary and President Aliyev discussed the historic opportunity of Azerbaijan and Armenia to achieve peace in the region. The secretary reiterated the offer of assistance from the United States to help facilitate the opening of regional transport and communication links. Secretary Blinken encouraged continued bilateral dialogue, such as the recent meeting between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia in Tbilisi. The secretary also reaffirmed his support for productive discussions negotiated by the EU. He conveyed that the United States has co-chaired the OSCE Minsk Group since 1994 and is ready to work bilaterally and with like-minded partners to help Armenia and Azerbaijan find long-term comprehensive peace. Secretary Blinken also urged President Aliyev to release all remaining Armenian detainees.
