On behalf of the United States of America, I send my best wishes to the Maldivian people on Independence Day on July 26th.
The relationship between the United States and the Maldives strengthens with each passing day as we create a more just, prosperous and safer region and world for our peoples. We work together on today’s most pressing challenges, including fighting climate change, ending the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and promoting the rules-based international order that safeguards territorial sovereignty and integrity. This partnership is strengthened by a shared commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law. The US-Maldives relationship is an example of everything that can be achieved when two countries with common values work together.
We also express our deep appreciation for the leadership of the Maldives as President of the United Nations General Assembly in condemning the large-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia. We look forward to continuing to deepen this relationship through the opening of a US Embassy in the Maldives and the appointment of a dedicated US Ambassador to the Maldives.
