We are in the summer season when we expect the number of guest arrivals to decrease. It is traditional. But based on the numbers and what we’re seeing here at home, that’s not happening.
Hawaii travel usually begins to reach its peak summer season in mid-June. It gets busier as we get closer to July 4th and stays busy until August 1st. After that, the number of arrivals drops consistently until the Christmas and New Year holidays. But not this year.
Arrivals are up 10% in late summer compared with 2019.
Eleven days ago, since August 1, at the end of this summer, domestic arrivals were 321,613 compared to 292,165 in 2019. It seems unusual for us, given the economic climate and the fact that people have been on vacation domestically and internationally.
So what is going on?
1. The pent-up demand has not been fulfilled. While many people travel to Hawaii through Covid or have made up for lost time this year, others are still waiting for the chance to enjoy their long-awaited Hawaiian vacation.
2. Airfares are low. Overland flights to Hawaii from typical west coast gateways are relatively inexpensive. 3. Hawaii remains an easy-to-access, domestic, tropical vacation.
