Couldn’t squeeze in a summer vacation this year? Warm up and start looking towards autumn. Travel prices will drop by 40% in the first weeks of autumn, according to information from Hopper, the site to find deals and the app.
Americans are spending more on their summer vacations than they did before the 2019 pandemic, as prices have increased for all parts of the trip — gas, flights, hotels, restaurants and more. .
Fortunately, travelers are starting to see relief coming this month. Domestic fares will drop to $286 return later in August, down 25% from the summer high of $400 in May, according to the travel guide. a Hopper.

Prices will be cheaper after Labor Day. Domestic fares for travel in September and October will cost travelers $238 on average. This is down 37% – $142 cheaper – than summer prices and even 3% lower than 2019 prices.
In hindsight, international aviation is more of a mixed bag. Fares for travel in September and October have fallen to an average of $754 return, down 19% – and $179 cheaper – from summer prices, but still 17% higher than in 2019.
To get the best price for domestic flights, Hopper recommends booking at least three to six weeks in advance. For international travel, book flights at least four weeks before travel.
Some of the West Coast’s most popular destinations are seeing significant fall prices for the fall compared to summer highs. The average round-trip fare to San Diego is $252 round-trip, down from $230 from the summer peak. Flights to Portland, Oregon, are averaging $314 return for September and October, which is down $218 from summer prices. And arriving in Salt Lake City this fall will cost, on average, $242 return, down $201 from early summer.
