Is he done in Tampa? Will there be opportunities elsewhere, perhaps in Las Vegas, Miami or Tennessee? Is it time to move to the broadcast booth?
His demeanor after Monday night’s debacle didn’t bode well for the 23-year-old veteran who knows he just played his last game. If there’s one thing Monday night’s loss exposed about the 45-year-old Brady, it’s that his game has mostly come down to dunks and dunks. There is very little stretching of the ball down the field. Instead, it’s a series of swinging passes and shallow crosses and simply trying to get rid of the ball before it’s drilled.
His 9.6 yards per completion average is the lowest of his career and the second lowest in the NFL this season behind only Kyler Murray. What that translated to was defenses that weren’t worried about Brady going over the top, instead tightening up and creating tight windows for even easy throws.
Does that sound exactly like what Las Vegas could use to get the ball to Davante Adams or what Miami needs with Tyreek Hill?
And yet, even at age 45, coming off the worst season of his 23-year career, he still managed to throw and complete more passes than any other quarterback in the league — more than he’s ever had in a single season.
This is not O.J. Simpson limping to the finish line in a Niners uniform or Willie Mays playing the strings as a New York Met. Brady is a year removed from leading the league in passing and touchdowns and nearly won his fourth MVP.
The only reason his future is in doubt is his age. And yet, here we are.
Brady’s entire career has been highlighted by proving people wrong, from that first Super Bowl victory over the mighty Rams to the seventh over the indomitable Chiefs… and everywhere in between. Counting him even as the calendars continued to surpass the historical comparison of any other running back in NFL history became so dangerous that most of us stopped doing it.
“I’m going home and getting a good night’s sleep,” he said when asked what was next.
