From the start, it felt like a frustrating game to evaluate, and the Cowboys were only too happy to put the thought into action.
It was an odd place – on the road, in the rain against a team that had (surprisingly) had fewer games than they did. Despite the Tennessee Titans’ lesser record, the do-or-die nature of their Week 18 game at Jacksonville saw them sitting out several starters. As a result, the 27-13 victory ended up feeling a lot more confusing than they would have liked – not that they brought it back. “Win is win, every day of the week,” said Dak Prescott.
The reason must be clear, because it has become a familiar chorus. For starters, they’re constantly grappling with turnover, a problem that’s getting harder to explain – and apparently harder to stop.
It looks exactly like you’d expect from watching most other Cowboy games. Dak Prescott’s perfect cross conjured and popped into the defense for an interception. Moments later, Dak Prescott’s questionable decision was taken by All-Pro safety Kevin Byard. “One fall, one minus decision,” echoes. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy.
Throw in a missed snap, and the Cowboys managed three turnovers in a quarter football.
“I don’t like them,” McCarthy said. “Unfortunately, you have your ups and downs in this league. Are we not getting style points, that’s okay. We still have 12 wins.”
You can’t argue with the results, even if mistakes give pause. For those keeping the score at home, Dallas has committed 12 turnovers in the last six games. They have turned the ball over several times in three of their last four games. It’s ironic to note that their cleanest game in that regard, last week’s 40-34 win against Philadelphia, saw Prescott throw the pick-six that put them into the opening hole 10-0.
Amazingly, the problem still hasn’t hurt them as much as you might hope. True, turnovers played a large role in road losses to Green Bay and Jacksonville. However, the Cowboys have only been held under 27 points once since Prescott’s return. They are averaging 35 points per game over the last 10 games, and they are 8-2 over that same span.
It was boring again on Thursday night, as they came back from that sloppy second quarter to outpoint the Titans 17-7.
“This is a tough team,” said Prescott. “Coach McCarthy made our mantra at the start of the year. Honestly, just took the pain we had from last year and used it going forward this year.”
Does any of that make you, the discerning fan, feel any better? Does not seem. Such errors are often magnified in the postseason, and it’s hard to imagine them beating an NFC competitor with that style of play.
Then, there is the injury factor. The Cowboys appear to be running away tonight with little actual trouble, but losing the most prominent of the night could have serious consequences. Tyler Biadasz left the game late in the third quarter with an ankle injury. The issues forced some serious line-shuffling, as Connor McGovern switched from left guard to centre, with Jason Peters entering the game at left tackle and Tyler Smith switching to left guard.
Fortunately, the Cowboys find themselves in a favorable situation. While there’s still a slim hope of stealing the division title from Philadelphia, the Cowboys’ Week 18 game in Washington isn’t a do-or-die scenario, given their playoff berth is secure. However, with this group’s defensive losses cropping up every week, it’s confusing to imagine dealing with a rush of playoff passes with an offensive line that isn’t as sound as it could be. At this point, keep in mind that the Cowboys had 361 yards, 27 points and converted 62% of their third loss against a team that might win the AFC South next weekend.
This is a puzzling puzzle that the Cowboys have come up with. Thursday night’s road win improved their record to 12-4. They have now achieved a 12-win streak season for the first time since 1994-95, when they were the sport’s undisputed rulers.
At the same time, last year’s 12-win season simply evaporated in the first round of the playoffs. As a franchise, they haven’t string together a true playoff since that 1995 season – a fact that eats away at the mind after an intercepted pitch or sprained ankle. Is it fair? Probably not. That doesn’t make it any less true, and it doesn’t mean it will change until the Cowboys make it happen. It’s just another part of the charm of playing for Team America – a challenge that Prescott and his teammates know all too well and probably embraced too.
“When you play for this organization there’s a lot of noise and a lot of things around that really don’t matter to win football games,” said Prescott. “So the brotherhood and the culture that we’ve built is something that we have to rely on, something that we have to connect to and multiply. I think that’s what allowed us to do this.”
