As we count down the days to 2023, we look back at the sporting year that gave us 2022, a year full of unforgettable triumphs and painful defeats.
Canada has had many successes on the international stage, including 26 medals at the Beijing Winter Olympics, a gold medal at the Junior World Championships and qualification for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 36 years.
And while it’s almost impossible to compare teams across sports and leagues, let’s take a look at which Canadian pro sports franchises were the most successful in 2022.
5. Toronto Blue Jays

The Jays finished with a 92-70 record – one more win than the previous season – and seven games behind the New York Yankees for second place in the American League East. Bo Bichette led the AL in hits (189), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. scored seventh in home runs (32) and fifth in RBIs (97), starting pitcher Alek Manoah owned the third-best ERA (2.24) and third-most wins (16), while closer Jordan Romano took third in saves (36). On an individual level, many Blue Jays have had successful seasons, with six players selected to the MLB All-Star Game.
Unfortunately, the excitement was cut short quite abruptly in the playoffs. Toronto was put out 4-0 in the first game of the AL wild card series by the Seattle Mariners. Things looked better in Game 2 as the Jays took an 8-1 lead after five innings at Rogers Centre. What followed was one of the greatest falls in baseball history as the Mariners stormed back to win 10-9 and stun the rowdy home crowd, ending a promising season for the Jays.
4. Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers may not have had the regular season success a team led by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitel would have hoped for, but they finally pulled off a solid postseason streak in 2022. On the same subject : The United States hope to put their World Cup demons behind them in Qatar.
After a 49-win, 104-point regular season in which they finished second in the Pacific Division behind provincial rivals the Calgary Flames, the Oilers defeated the pesky Los Angeles Kings in seven games in the first round. They then faced the Flames in the highly anticipated Battle of Alberta second round series, which Edmonton went through in five games. Next came the Colorado Avalanche, which proved too much to handle, pushing the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Finals before winning their first championship since 2001.
Edmonton currently ranks fourth in the Pacific with 38 points and an 18-14-2 record. While the team is still trying to find a balance, McDavid lights up the NHL unsurprisingly with a league-leading 29 goals and 65 points in 34 games. Draisaitl is not far behind, finishing second with 55 points.
3. CF Montréal
CF Montréal had its most successful regular season ever, holding franchise records for points (65) and wins (20), finishing second in the Eastern Conference behind the Philadelphia Union. To see also : Why make real progress in the NFL off-season. Montreal defeated Orlando City 2-0 in the first round of the playoffs, but lost to New York City FC in the conference semifinals.
Rookie Head Coach Wilfried Nancy finished a very close runner-up for MLS Coach of the Year, and many young, promising stars, including Djordje Mihailovic, Ismaël Koné and Alistair Johnston, made big bucks by moving to Europe after stellar seasons in Montreal .
The club was also well represented in Qatar where six players made up the Canada men’s team for the country’s first World Cup appearance since 1986.
2. Toronto Maple Leafs
This year must have been the best for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a long time.
The Leafs set franchise records for wins (54) and points (115) in the 2021–22 campaign, finishing second in the Atlantic Division behind the President’s Cup winning Florida Panthers. Superstar striker Auston Matthews had a career-high 60 goals and 106 points season which earned him the Rocket Richard and Art Ross trophies as well as the Ted Lindsay Award.
Despite a memorable season, Toronto was once again eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, this time leading the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning to seven games. The Lightning made their third consecutive appearance in the Cup Final, but failed to take three peats.
The Buds didn’t miss a beat in the 2022-23 season, once again getting off to a roaring start with a 20-7-6 record and 46 points, second in the Atlantic behind the Boston Bruins. Matthews continues to play at the league-wide level, tied with Mitch Marner for leading the team in points (38), with the latter putting together a record 23-game streak that was recently broken.
With a solid goaltender supporting their high-octane offensive, the Leafs once again look like a contender.
1. Toronto Argonauts
This may be a controversial choice given the popularity of the CFL – or lack thereof – compared to other leagues or franchises in Canada, but the reason the Toronto Argonauts are number one on this list is very simple: they won the championship.
The Argos finished first in the Eastern Division with 22 points and an 11-7-0 record, which would put them fourth overall in the Western Division. As mediocre as their regular season was, Toronto got a bye in the first round and then turned up the heat in the playoffs by beating the Montreal Alouettes 34-27 in the East Final at BMO Field.
The Argonauts defeated the two-time defending Gray Cup champions Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the finals in Regina, beating them 24-23 thanks to a crazy last drive by backup quarterback Chad Kelly to win his first championship since 2017.
