WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – The Watertown Red and Black are home for the 3rd straight week on Saturday night, as they host Auburn in the Royal Football Tournament.

The Red and Black enter the game at 6-0 on the EFL season, while Auburn is riding a 2-game winning streak and sits at 3-3 in league play.

The last time these two teams met was on July 16th in Auburn, where the Red and Black beat the Pride 56-0.

Despite that, Red and Black coach George Ashcraft knows this is a different Auburn team than the Watertown team he faced back in July.

“Well, they’ve picked up a few guys, I know that, which will fill out their squad a little bit. They haven’t played in a few weeks, so you never know. I just know that every game is always a good game and that’s why you play ’em. We’ve got an arsenal on offense and defense, we’re getting along well and I can’t imagine too many bumps but then again you never know,” Ashcraft said.

Watertown enters the game on a 6-game winning streak and has the league’s highest scoring offense, putting up 188 points, a league-best 21 points.

The Red and Black lead the league in every division, and Ashcraft said he’s been impressed with how his team has performed in all three phases of the game so far in 2022.

“Yeah, I’m very happy with the whole team, you know, both sides of the ball, like I said, special teams. The coaches come up with a great game plan every week and the players are sticking to it and continuing to do that, it’s a good thing.” “We’re going to come out in the end. Stick together and keep going and we’ll be fine,” Ashcraft said.

Ashcraft said one of the keys to the Red and Black’s success has been the 12th man, with large crowds at hand in the team’s last 2 contests.

The coach said he expects another big crowd at the stadium this weekend before the team enjoys a break from the schedule.

“Two big crowds, this week we’re hoping to come back for the 3rd time before we get a bit of a break from action so to speak. So when we come back and play on the road we play Broome County and teams like that. ah I want to double the people here if we can because the people in town are really changing all aspects of the game. It’s great,” said Ashcraft.

The Red and Black vs. Auburn game is set for Saturday night at 7 pm at George Ashcraft Field at the Alex Duffy Fairgrounds.
